Its inherently anti-privacy.
Things that need privacy should be done on a computer, running Linux. You can care about privacy on this device. Only use IceCat, riot, encrypt all your files - whatever. This is how I do it.
But a smartphone itself is build as an antiprivacy device. Like I already pointed out is is manufactured as a tool to enhance convenience which is the opposite of privacy.
I use an Android phone and I use whatsapp, PayPal and all the other stuff on it. (Well, I dont use instagram, facebook, twitter and so on, but just because I dont see the purpose in those apps, not because of privacy matters).

This is main problem with finding alternatives to this kind of application: they might exist and be beutiful but as long as everybody else is using the botnet alternative you cannot do much about it
