I watch his videos. His best videos are when he talks about the real world or his own life experiences. He is intelligent, in fact, I think he might have browsed Jow Forums a while ago. He literally installed gentoo and used that as his main operating system, and he uses "BTFO" unironically.

This guy is entirely too dismissive and judgemental of people to run a channel on giving advice.

Eli helped me get into a good mindset for entry level IT help desk stuff awhile back, but he degraded hugely over the last few years. His classes are actually nice.

He's also completely full of shit. In a video about thermal paste on Steve's channel (another insufferable asshole) he claims that thermal paste never goes bad and instead the reason you have to replace it is some "pump out" effect where the paste literally gets squeezed out over time by pressure from the heat sink.
Anyone who has removed a heat sink knows that this is bullshit.

He does little nifty projects sure, but he doesn't actually DO anything that isn't laid out step-by-step. He reviewed the original pinebook laptop once, and opened up and essentially said "wow look at all this circuitry... there are your mic-in and aux ports... there's your HDMI... and there's your CPU (while pointing to the network adapter chip)". He's a complete and utter dumbfuck, everything about him is total cringe.

All of them. I mean this genuinely. They have an incentive to make clickbait videos and try to make as many shekels as possible. This leads to videos about “hot topics” that are inane. Videos that are drawn out. Misinformation because all they do is repeat what an article says. No fact checking because they’re trying to milk as many videos as possible. They have a platform and people assume views and subscribers means valid information. They don’t reply to comments and you can’t see the other viewpoint because it’s drowned out. They include sponsored ads in videos because not enough shekels.

This. The mass-commercialization of YouTube was inevitable, but I do feel part of the blame is on the company. Content creators don't care about quality content, they just care about publishing as much as possible for their sponsors. They aren't getting paid as much as they used to from YouTube, and YouTube has been bleeding money for a while. So instead of quality content, you get videos based on sneaky deals from behind-the-scenes.

And there'll be a quickly edited extremely fake video produced as if it weren't an advertisement. It's just shit, all of it. These "influencers" are just prostitutes, selling their services to the highest bidder in an emerging service economy. In general they're shit humans, I genuinely don't think I could be friends with someone who made a living that way. Seeing both sides of them, in front of the camera and off. The stark contrast, the smile lighting up instantly when the camera starts recording, disappearing immediately once it stops. But it's hard to blame them for doing it when they make a fuckton more than the guy who gets up at 5 to get ready for his commute.

Mainstream - shill youtubers that never really gives any negative input and always follow what the consensus is (instead of actual experience) and unless you've never ever lifted/worked with computers is completely useless to watch.

Obscure - good youtubers, makes more cutting edge and straight to the point videos and has no problem bashing whatever dumb shit pops up, however every single fucking one of them turns either into some gimmicky irrelevant channel or into some rant channel that isn't even tied to it's original content (Luke, Eli, Louise, in tech).

I used to follow him, he tried to leave youtube two or three times but kept coming back. He also tried to start a mentoring program with some other youtube nonames and that flopped hard, because the only people who signed up were Eli fans who wanted to talk to him. Sort his videos by most viewed you have to scroll far to find anything recent.

I lost it when he did a video about (((open source))) without mentioning a single time "FREE software" and the meaning behind free (as in freedom)

Whenever a teacher becomes a philosopher is always his downfall. Only other person to be affected by it that comes to mind is that Luke guy. pretty decent Tutorials on various text formatting stuff, and then he started to become a varg/hyde/peterson hybrid and he lost all fucking credibility and viewer interest.
Eli has some good stuff but his fucking weird lisp and general attitude (I'm old so I'm right) is very damaging in a field where what you're supposed to know changes by the day. His complete lack of knowledge (as far as I know) of basic component level repair, software development, and general culture of computing aside from boomer tier just an IT guy level stuff is disappointing. What happened is that he got burnt out being an IT guy when IT began to be less and less viable. Then his wife got cancer when it was getting harder to make money, so he was busting his ass to try and pay for medical bills when he was already burnt out in the first place. At this point, he acquired his attitude. Then around muh adpocalypse time, he realized that making rants that seemed based and distressed raked in cash. So he's been into the fake self pity and drama ever since. Now that those types of videos are old hat and people are sick of them, he's going back to making actual tech content that's about on-par with the desperate trash he was pumping out when his wife had cancer.
