cutepads are cute!

I've been trying to find a T430 to buy in Europe but they all have UK, GER, or Swiss keyboard layouts, what gives? Should I just spent an extra 50€ to get a US keyboard and switch it out?

im
is ebay the best way to find someone to ship me something? i dont think i like the idea of not having warranty but at the same time having it for cheap sounds really good.

Which thinkpad is ideal for just playing visual novels?

I just got this t540p for free at work today. I tossed in a 120gb ssd and installed Ubuntu 18.04. It's an i5 4210m. I'd like to get one of the docks if I can snag one.

Attached: IMG_20190821_210423.jpg (4032x3024, 3.58M)

T540p was my first thinkpad. Upgrade dat CPU! I put a i7-4800 in mine. Also the 3K screen is a fun and awesome mod.

Any of them

what new thinkpad is best for coding, reading, and shitposting? don't even game but bought the new razer blade after listening to that retard linus and the arrow key placement is such ass, i keep hitting it instead of the "/" key, not sure if my autism will ever let me get used to it. also got a t420s and a 230x shortly after installed mint and have gotten more shit done on those, just need a decent windows laptop for work.

I'm
and I have to say the keyboard on this t540p is sooo good. I highly recommend it if you don't mind a bulkier laptop.

Depends how much you wanna spend
everything from the T440/X240 onwards is gonna be fine, just make sure it's got 8+GB RAM, an SSD and preferably a 1080p display. With 8GM RAM and an SSD even a T420 runs fine, tho it's a bit dated now.

my T530 has a centered wasd. I never knew how much I needed this before I had it. I love everything about this fucking laptop including the amazing typing speed I get while using it.

even writing more loquacious posts just to enjoy writing for longer periods.

I might go 20's keyboard though, just because it did feel a little bit more "beefy" and might be better for coding with.

W540 owner and I think the keyboard's great, but I would still prefer the 7 row. Only problem with it is that it's got no NumPad, which is important for me.

new to think pads T580 here and battery sucks ass

my battery lasts 5 hours of casual use

what the fuck are you doing wrong

also congrats on being master race t5xx line. 15.6 smells like productivity

>xx80
oh no

review.coreboot.org/q/t440p

socketed xx40 thinkpads are getting coreboot. make sure that you have a socketed one, T440p, T540p, W540.
basically all pads that is using QM87 as they have bootguard off, they dont have the boot guard capability desu.

For me it's the X220, the cutest ThinkPad

Some newer VNs seem to be more graphically intensive hence the question.

ThinkPad n00b
pls what is coreboot and why shoud I use it

I guess mine is normal then this is my first laptop lel where to cop cheap batteries?

I want to install Linux on my x250. Which version is the best?

Any good brands for battery ?

xubuntu

T420+ are going to be fine for 99% of things, I don't know how graphically intense a VN can be but anything made after 2010 should be able to handle it

I did the 1080p mod with my T420 since my T440p crapped the bed and I didn't want that lcd to go to waste. Sadly as soon as I did this, my T420 keyboards "asdf" keys stopped working.

Attached: IMG_20190822_211627_DRO.jpg (2560x1440, 2.28M)

How hot does that x201 get?

I just got a t420 but it has no ssd or battery. I would appreciate any good links.

I've been going through these threads in the archives and I'm having trouble grasping why Thinkpads are so popular here. Admittedly, I still barely know what a Thinkpad is.

I mostly use my laptop for watching videos, creating shitloads of browser tabs, and playing decade-old games. Is there an advantage to getting a Thinkpad instead of a new laptop in this case?

they're good looking laptops with wide support that are easily purchased secondhand

They HAD great design, water drains in the keyboard, hot-swappable batteries, etc. Lenovo of course turned them into any other piece of cheap Chinese crap, so these threads are like the AMD fanboys that keep buying the product with worse benchmarks.

pay $50-$150, get a laptop that's easy to upgrade/mod/repair and works fine for general use (browsing/writing/mail/music/porn)

posted from my $65 w500

Do you have any tips on checking purchased second-hand thinkpads? Like screen, hdd and battery are usual but perhaps there's something else that would tell about impending issues if left unnoticed

x220 tablet

On eBay they're usually sold in bulk. If so try and choose grade A, they tend to be near perfect. If buying from a private seller make sure they have enough pictures of it as well as having good seller feedback.

If you want a modern experience get x220/T420 or later. Best to buy without an SSD and install your own as it will be cheaper.

Do cute anime girls use Thinkpads as well?

Attached: D44B3341-FA6F-4372-9CFC-C767F0B7C308.jpg (800x1000, 96K)

If you're buying them for linux be careful, the trackpads don't deal well with Linux mouse acceleration. The trackpoints do fine though. If you want to use it with linux but a variant with a larger trackpad such as x240/T440

of course

Attached: rin thinkpad.png (1920x1080, 821K)

they use appwe :3

I'm going to get used TP. I'm in Yuropoor area but have a local reseller fromwhere to buy one. It is not as cheap as ebay but at least something. 200€ hard limit. I recon getting an used ssd is not wise. I can get t420 i5 or x220 with that money.

Attached: 77F68DFD-1099-4188-9454-5403096DB21F.jpg (800x600, 87K)

Nevermind just checked ebay.de and I need to stop being lazy. t430 is 100€ etc.

Attached: 722EFB6F-E054-479F-B100-D0080F6CC462.jpg (696x720, 30K)

you could get an x220 for 100EUR

Bought a T440s on eBay. I'm looking forward to getting it but I'm just worried about the battery. It's only gonna be used for lectures and taking places so it's not critically in need of a big battery. Are the batteries still good and are they easy to replace if necessary?

The external one just pops out. The internal one is a bit trickier but not particularly difficult.

Carry a portable power source, a car battery or something, with you and just plug it in.

im planning on getting an x230 and replacing the keyboard with the x220 keyboard, would this mess up the water draining because of the different keyboard?

I wish you could libreboot the x201 love the mouse buttons on bottom

How can I clean the monitor? I used a glasses cloth. Nothing changed. I am scare to press harder.

What tools would I need to open the keyboard to clean it underneath?
I got a T430. I am happy I got this even if refurbished rather than a normie netbook.

Attached: tv_eva.png (638x340, 513K)

Does T440s have socketed CPU? I know the X series don't, getting it for a bro's girl and she complained the T420 I got for her a few years back is too heavy. Money really isn't an issue since she's paying for it.

no
440p does

So which of the T4x0s series is a good one? I have a T400s which had a retarded mini data hard disk slot it took me forever to find a decent SSD for it.

not sure ive never checked, not hot enough to burn my leg
it can do coreboot but it's a bit dodgy so i went back to stock
it looks good desu, atleast kbs are relatively cheap

Attached: 1564551043545.png (1364x1326, 1.48M)

can you change the cpu on t460?

anything incel post t440p is soldered

dam

Can I actually buy that Laptop with a VHS player in it, or is it just a meme?

T440s is slim and great
T440p is thicc and great with quad core

I am so happy anons. My x230 has just arrived. I plan:
>swap HDD with SDD
>test the keyboard to make sure I need to switch to x220
>use it a little bit to make sure I REALLY need to change the screen into FHD
It will be my little Linux hobby machine and maybe my little travel companion

Attached: IMG_20190823_114649.jpg (8000x6000, 2.29M)

>swap HDD with SDD
get an msata ssd instead and you can use an ssd + hdd setup

What about the t440? I found one for 150 euros. i5-4300u, 8gb ram and 1600x900. Should i get it? For coding and some autocad

How's a T61 with whatever the best CPU it can handle, 2x4GB RAM and one of THE 4:3 IPS screens that don't have the bubbljng issue? Can it play 720p youtube videos with hardware acceleration in mpv? VP9 youtube videos?

I have a t440 with the i5-4300u, 8gb ram, ssd and 1080p IPS. I'm pretty happy with it, paid £170 for it.

Attached: faggot.jpg (1292x969, 159K)

ubuntu with unity

Fuck, nice price. The cheapest i found was the one i mentioned above. No ssd or IPS

The thinkstation

Attached: IMG_20190823_135131.jpg (3968x2976, 2.11M)

Jealous

Yeah she wants them light, so T4x0s or X2x0 are the only choices. Trying to see which performs less shitty.

Update on the 1800¥ thinkpad.
I added a cheap 128GB SSD and 4GB of RAM.

Attached: USER_SCOPED_TEMP_DATA_orca-image--877340728.jpg (1080x1439, 327K)

how are the new thinkpads? the ones you can buy from lenovo.com
are they worth the retail price or should I just buy office used ones
I have an x230 and I really like it but I kinda wish I could have a slightly bigger screen (more resolution) and a faster processor to compile shit faster
do they play well with linux?

I was looking for a laptop for ages at that time and kept browsing /tpg/. I found it on ebay by pure coincidence, a few hours left, no bids. I ended up winning with one bid. The guy ended up living in the same city as me, he had lots of feedback and has been doing this for a long time by the looks of it. He even gave me £15 off and delivered it himself.

On ebay you just have to be patient sometimes, it's a bitch. I mainly use it as a hackintosh for Logic X and so far it's fucking amazing, to say I was close to spending £300-400 on an actual macbook.

Hi, I disassembled my x220 for the first time completely and cleaned the fan. Immediately after that (without checking the sound iirc) I reinstalled arch on it.
Now my speakers don't work anymore.
I read 100 forum posts, played around with amixer (yes I unmuted my sound) , pavucontrol and many other packages, but could not fix it.
I do get sound from the headphone jack tho.
I just ran the official alsa-info.sh script which outputs all data about my sound system. You can find the result here:
alsa-project.org/db/?f=ff955851f3d360336844779b1456f7250c024373

I want to know for sure if I made a mistake with the hardware when I put the notebook back together of if I made a mistake reinstalling some packages.
What is the best way to answer this question?
Thanks!

>Thinkstation
Any recommendation? Preferably something small.
I have a monitor and Keyboard/mouse at work so instead of carrying a laptop I can carry that.

holla dim display crew!

Attached: R0000231.jpg (3255x2964, 2.14M)

yeah my t440 IPS is dimmer than anticipated. I had the first opportunity today to use it outside and it's underwhelming.

At least you got LED and I guess around 300nits.
My X61s is obviously CCFL and I can only really use it inside with all the lights turned off. Without measuring I'd say about 50nits are left.

Can't be too expensive to change the panel, I've heard it can be as easy as 4 screws. Mine already came with the IPS screen installed.

whats bad about the 580?

It is newer model. Everything new is shit, according the general consensus on Jow Forums and not just on thinkie general.

I'm considering getting 12" laptop.
Should I go for Thinkpad X230 or Elitebook 2570p? Both have the same specs.
I also have T420 if it makes a difference.

Attached: DpXuZUNXUAAddjg.jpg (1003x883, 111K)

X230

Why the fuck did they decide it would be a good idea to get rid of the browser buttons and put Page Up/Down in their place

Attached: USER_SCOPED_TEMP_DATA_orca-image--1522175025.jpg (1080x1439, 311K)

Can I put a T420 keyboard in a T430 or does that only work on the X220/230?

Never mind that shit what's ten fucking times worse is having the CTRL not being the left most key.

Any reason why?

I don't know, but at least Control+PgUp is previous tab and Control+PgDn. So you kind of have the functionality still there.

idk i wanted a gucci ass thinkpad and not both a screen and a keyboard at the size of two iPads
im happy with my 580

probably a loose flat cable friend. happens a lot.

What model do you have? xx10 and newer should have this option.

Yes but the palmrest is not a clean swap like with the X220/X230

Attached: ctrlfnswap.jpg (3968x2976, 2.59M)

You don't understand. Smaller Thinkpad fits easily into my Versace handbag or Louis Vuitton. I am fabulous.

Daily reminder:thiccpads be thicc

>i5-4300u
>winblows 10 & chrome
>1080p 60fps jewtube video
>80-100% CPU usage
Fucking really?

What cable is responsible for the speakers in the x220? I can't find any good pictures on the internet.

Attached: 1553900006353.png (419x427, 55K)

Thank you very much!

Your gpu is either broken or your browser isnt using hardware acceleration.

as a t440p owner that 7 key layout always makes me jealous.

Just got me a brand new e590 as a personal work laptop. Fucking amazing for the price. Thanks Jow Forums for making aware of these bits of kit.

Spin the X220 like pic related.
It should work.
