Consumer VPNs are a meme. Imagine this:

The only feasibly effective VPN is if you stealthily pay for an internet connection in another location under an alias, and route your traffic through a machine connected to that, or if you install VPN software on a router in someone else's home without them knowing about it.

If you can't pull off one of those and you really need to protect and obfuscate your identity and activity, just use TOR or I2P. They're truly the best you'll ever get.

I was absolutely flabbergasted to find how shitty the software behind most VPNs were. I suspect that if I knew anything about networking I really should have been able to route things through VPN vs not through VPN myself, but I really expected that anything that called themselves a VPN Service would have had to had the simple concept of "it makes sense for SOME traffic to go through VPN, but not ALL traffic, so here are your bare minimum filtering options." But apparently that was a premium feature only offered by a select few of "amazingly robust" VPNs.

Story of the decade, man.

Anyway, I ended up using Surf Shark, but I'm impressed with their throughput numbers, but they get the job done.
