China has all the supply chain infrastructure for components and materials. Dumbass companies think they can just move to somewhere else with low wages if needed but much of the time when they try to move it's a total disaster. China carefully made sure they seized the bulk of all production so that supply chains elsewhere ceased to exist. Now they have absolute control over many western companies as it's totally impossible to relocate production for them.

I work in a large factory in the United States.
There's a "fully automatic" production line that currently has at least 20 employees on it at any given time babysitting the robots and the conveyors because it's so badly designed things fault out constantly. Without humans the thing would almost certainly catch fire the first day.

It takes a more intelligent person to use an excavator than to use a shovel. Jobs are automated from the bottom to the top in terms of complexity. Over time the only jobs left are complex enough that the bottom end of the population isn't skilled enough to work at all.
