basically any socketed xx40 machine that is on QM87 can have coreboot. check bootguard status!

What Twinkpad (reasonably cheap) is a okay for World of Warcraft and MAME? Planning to play the classic.

Pic related, it's me in the public pondering about the purchase.

Is it worth keeping an old T500 that gets hot and can hardly perform any tasks? It hasn't been upgraded.

Redpill me on this machine.

What are your opinion on versapro laptops from NEC? I want one or X240

Pic related, it's me wondering about the purchase

what is this?

My Jap friend owns one, he says the keyboard is utter junk, but the build quality is really nice. Typical Panasonic stuff.

>Thinkbook
Now who is that thing for? Cheapskates usually buy some Acer shit because cheap and thots buy some Apple. Considering it doesn't even have a Lan port I just don't see worth it's price, considering it can't even fully ride the ThinkPad brand train.

Are these only available in japan ;(

You don't kanji?

ThinkBook is a literal joke made for macfags

advice me

I have an x280 1366x768 and I want to change the screen to an IPS one. Do I have to do anything else (driver wise) or is it just plug and play? the same for the backlit keyboard

I'm looking at 3 thinkpads on ebay, a t550, x250, and a w550s. literally all of them would work for my purposes, but with the obvious advantages and disadvantages of each. idk what to do

What other upgrades can I make for my Thinkpad X200T? Already Librebooted, antheros wifi, SSD, 8 gigs of ram. Was thinking of upgrading the battery, but I’m not even sure that is necessary, and I don’t know how I feel about buying a Ultrapad or whatever those things are called.

Nice collection! Here's mine:

170 with the additional 2242 and battery or are those separate?

Anyone with experience using eGPU adapters with your thiccpads?

Any thoughts on the x260?

decent but could be better

in terms of what?

Any thinkpads that can take proper sized 2280 m.2 drives?

Just sold my desktop and I still have the drives my current chinkpad is an X220 but it can only take a 2.5'' and I'm thinking of upgrading now that I'm going to be laptop only

Budget is £600, don't mind buying used

I'm sure it's a meme, but the Thinkbooks actually looked interesting and pretty well values until
>single channel soldered on memory

What the fuck were they thinking? I could get over the fact that it's soldered on if it were dual channel, but Jesus Christ.

are there any older thinkpads that have 16:10 screens?

X200,X201, T400 and T410 have 16:10 screens, x200 and T400 can be librebooted, T410 is the most modern one, X201 is a bit of an ugly child and is basically the X200 with a shit first gen i processor shoved into it

Is there anything useful that can be done with the expansion slot these days?

It seems like a bit of a meme port

The express card slot? Yeah apart from small usb ports pretty much anything else will stand out quite a bit.
I have a smart card slot which is even more useless to me, wish I had a express card slot.

So apparently the fucking chinks dropped thinklight on the new models? What's the last thinkpad to have thinklight?

Attached: hmmpad.png (1000x829, 362K)

**30 gen

fucks sake
I was looking to upgrade my X220 to something newer, but I guess I'll have to get a X200 and a motherboard from 51nb
fucking lenovo

Attached: taiga4.png (635x638, 408K)

Damn I've never seen that before. Would trade the shitty camera for that an day.

Biggest flaw of the x240 and up is the single ram slot. Combine that with the other flaws and it becomes hard to justify purchasing anything above the x230 unless you really, really want slightly better battery life and a newer, but not necessarily better, cpu.

So how do I go about removing my t440 wifi whitelist? Do I really need to buy shit to read/write to the bios or what? Can't someone just upload their modded t440 bios?

Where should I get a UK t440 backlit keyboard from? I've seen third party ones from chinaland but I'm guessing they're shit?

Is it a good idea to buy a T440p and upgrade to an IPS screen?

All the thinkpads that come with IPS screens already installed seem to be much more expensive

Yes, I did so and it was a huge improvement. Cost like $55

Thinklight is a useless gimmick

You can get a backlit keyboard now though
Thinklight is a weird solution now but it made a lot of sense when it was introduced and was still fine up until it was discontinued
I would say its even got some use cases were its better than a backlight even now but they really are very limited, and the light is bright enough to be annoying on red eye flights or overnight trains which is where high powered business people apparently use their laptops

Yes

If you're lucky you may find some on ebay from a local else taobao/aliexpress is where everyone is getting them from as well.

You need an usb stick. BIOS without whitelist are plenty available.

Attached: 20190126_5c4c71cae988d.jpg (600x908, 71K)

I just picked up a Lenovo IdeaPad for school because it was affordable. Did I fuck up?

where are you from
i want to get rid of my fhd t440p but this country is full of lowballer fucks

I kept reading about having to request whitelist removal on forums and whatnot so I assumed you couldn't flash someone else's BIOS. Is there a source for that that won't brick my laptop?

Considering that used ones are likely still cheaper, yes. However it's good enough for school shit. Get some job soon, then buy a proper one.

Sell to somewhere Europe.

>Europe
dang

Yeah you're right, you need to modify your own BIOS.
I just bought an usb programmer and modified/flashed my BIOS myself after researching a bit because that jew demanded money to do the mod.

Bulgaria

If you're outside the EU I would be fucked because we have lots of stupid taxes then

well damn
this thing has the ips b140han01.3 screen, m2 drive and all

>IdeaPad
yes

>Bulgaria
Sell to Germany/France/Belgium/Netherlands you get the idea. Their used electronic market is completly trashed.

I'm tempted to just downgrade to bios version 2.26 but I haven't yet read through the changelog. I'm guessing I'll be missing out on some security patches. Maybe some more performance?

If anything you'll get more performance because of the vulnerability patches.
The stock incel wlan card is alright though.

Is £240 for a T450 with an i5, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD and 1080p IPS screen in good condition too good to be true?

I've been looking at replacing my X230 with a model with a bigger and better screen, because the TN screen on the X230 is borderline unusable, and I've been looking at getting a T450s but they usually go for £350-400 in good condition, does the non S model really shave £100 off the price tag?

Pretty good deal but not amazing
I got a T450s with the regular screen for £200 a while back, new screen was super easy to install and was like £45

I have the N version, would replace it with the AC version but neither work on OSX. Im going to have to get some broadcom thing.

I pretty much exclusively look at companies selling refurbished laptops and not regular people selling used machines because I'm a bit wary over getting screwed, so I most likely have a warped sense of what good prices are.

>gayOS
Yeah that's the same reason why i removed the whitelist and installed a DW1560.
Then i wanted muh hentai games and docking station so went back to windows and flashed the stock bios.

Am I being overly paranoid if I remove the webcam altogether from my laptop and don't just disable it in the BIOS?

if you remove the camera pcb your thinklight won't work and the laptop won't sleep after closing the lid
i still remove the camera pcb though so carry on

Just put fucking tape over it lmao, its handy to have a webcam sometimes and the microphone is far more dangerous anyway

>and the microphone is far more dangerous anyway
which is gone if you remove the camera pcb

The mic is in the camera PCB? I thought it was above the power button between the two hinges

Well i guess it depends for each thinkpad model, i know it is for the T440p and pretty sure it's the same for the t420.

another good upgrade would be to swap from trannyboot to coreboot

>auction for ThinkPad I want

Can you fucking stop?

>DW1560
>£50-75
I did come across that model and I wish I could justify spending that on a £170 laptop. The intel AC model is like £10.

Is the E series so bad?
I want a 15.6'' whit AMD and SSD+HDD

>£50-75
wat
i got mine for like $15 on aliexpress two years ago

Frist time thinkpad ebatmy auction buyer.
What are the pit falls too watch out for? I notice the seller hasn't said its battery health, should that be a worry?

Attached: 1534102203908.png (900x900, 500K)

Wait what, after checking Aliexpress they're like $60 as well, what the hell.

Yeah fuck knows what happened. Maybe they caught on that this model is sought after or something.

Attached: Untitled.png (1566x745, 173K)

The battery is almost certainly ruined, factor in the cost of a new one, the batteries almost always are because business users are retards and don't pay for their own kit, which means they don't look after anything

Also check the photos very carefully and make sure the defects in the photos match the ones in the description and there aren't ones that are unmentioned, also check the sellers feedback to make sure he hasn't got much bad feedback for scamming/being disingenuous

Most people are pretty honest but there's always a chance they aren't

It's better than some generic Acer or whatever, but far off even a modern T or X, let alone the older ones.

I want to upgrade my x230 ram what are those tiny rams called? Or laptop ram? I only find those big ones for towers

SODIMMs

>SODIMMs
what's ddr2 and ddr3?

memory standards, DDR3 is more modern, google your model number to find what type it uses, unless its very old its almost certainly DDR3

thanks bro

A type of ram, what are you doing here m8
By the way for the x230 you need ddr3 o ddr3l ram so look for PC3-12800 or PC3L-12800 SODIMMs.

Attached: kuro.jpg (483x589, 78K)

>Refurbished X230 - i5 3320M/8GB RAM/256GB + 512GB SSD's/ with IPS monitor
>€340.00
Should I buy?

Attached: 118ce9a3bc54ab3a294904.jpg (1000x947, 88K)

*16GB RAM

dunno i'd rather upgrade a cheap one
16gb of ram is like two $20 sticks

Trying to sell my Precision M6600, I put it up for 325€ and the buyer proposes 275€. Should I accept? 2bh I had more like 300€ in mind considering it has the top specs despite being old.

i got mine for 100 eurobucks i5 4g Ram and 125 ssd. Your's way to expansive

so is anybody using an egpu? I'm not that much into gaming anymore but I'm rather curious how far you can push your toaster

pic related is the only panasonic laptop worth buying user. All the coders and office workers alike are using it in Japan.

Attached: panasonic laptop.jpg (251x201, 6K)

You'd need a competent CPU that doesn't throttle like arse. Very niche use to have something that powerful that's not a desktop.

The unit only comes with 8GB, the 340 price includes an additional 1x8gb stick and a decent 51gb SSD that I will buy seperately

Did that come with an IPS panel? This one comes with a 256gb SSD and my price includes another 512gb SSD

[Me)
Actually that was 250€ and not 275.

For me there's no point in even buying one. Given my shitty 4th gen i5 and 8gb ram, I won't be able to use any egpu to its full extent anyway. . .

nigga a quad core t440p performs like a desktop i7-3770
the t430 and t420 can use quad cores as well, those won't throttle a low-tier dgpu

*512gb, ffs

Knowing you need to be next to a power plug anyway, at what point is it preferable to have an old ass laptop with a eGPU and the setup it requires vs. a cheap tower with a dGPU in it? As I said, really a niche use case.

>t440p
>Remove WiFi to put a GPU
>reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/7rf2rx/external_gpu_on_t440p/

You're essentially not using it as a laptop anymore.
