if i had to say, veracrypt
just because it can encrypt while the system is running, pause encryption, etc no issue, which i find quite incredible

Unironically Dwarf Fortress

Not so much written rather trained

what do you mean by "sophisticated"
A sophist is a person with clever but erroneous arguments
the word sophisticated derives from the idea of sophistry
In other words, someone, or a thing which is "sophisticated"
would be a person or thing which acts in a way that is, largely, useless. We describe sophisticated people as having traits that
manifest themselves in the rituals of fashion and etiquette but who are, for the most part, lacking the will to do anything useful.
Cultured and fashionable but lacking substance.
If I had to name such a program I would have to say something like "Cortana"

Windows 10, easily. Maybe launch Win10 before they ripped out half the legacy features, or 8.1 for that matter, but definitely one form of modern Windows. If you don't realize just how absurdly complex that mess is then you've not really looked at it.

How do you define sophisticated? Duqu 2.0 was malware that operated entirely in RAM, wrote no files on the infected PC, and was able to copy files off of an infected PC + upload it to a central server without any detection. The originators of Duqu 2.0 also managed to infect Kaspersky Labs with it and it was only discovered by accident. It was called one of the most impressive pieces of software ever made by Kaspersky, would that count? Or do you mean by feature set?

my nigga

HFT algorithms can't be sophisticated; they need to be as simple as possible to run as fast as possible.

THIS

People have no idea just how much code has been sitting around unchanged since the windows 3.1 days or even before then. Decades worth of technically "obsolete" code that nobody cares to look at because it's worked fine the last 10 years and won't be looked at until something completely breaks down.

Compilers / programming languages

I agree, GCC is the most complex software

What about surface functions of CATIA?

This is pretty much the core problem with modern society clearly laid out in linguistic terms. It's not about any aspect of your performance at all - the most important thing is doing the rituals and the fashion, not any tangible or quantifiable benefit

It's no surprise modern software is full of sophistry because our entire culture seems to value useless garbage that looks fancy over things that actually function. Look at the automobile industry or the architecture of what is being built and it becomes obvious that form is far more important than function in our society

Everything is 'sophisticated' which is why nobody is happy and everything is overpriced and overengineered and barely functional

HolyC

Some Computer Algebra system most likely.

>HUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Bonus points: What is the most sophisticated piece of software written by a single person?

HolyC and TempleOS rank very high on this list at least.

Unreal

no really

Stuxnet

DNA
Seriously, that's full-blown coding. It is real code. Anyone who sees the transcription process protein alpha-helicase fold itself into form, and do what it does, is a believer.

But, I'm pretty in awe of Adobe Dimension. That's some powerful stuff.

Stuxnet was kinda based but it was found, the most elegant nation-state tier software is never found.

>Computer Algebra system
should i implement it in Lisp from PAIP book and then rewrite it into python/MERN stack code? Is it feasible?
Should i learn Laravel? Why it produces beautiful code? Why its better than PHP+MYSQLi spaghetti on backend with ajax js glue?

no love for JDownloader 2?(with the botnet-free installer, ofc)
