It's not bad. I downloaded it when I bought a tablet on a whim and I like it's workflow for the most part. Though admittedly, that's coming from someone who used only Paint.NET for the last 10 years.

Its very good for image editing. Compared to Photobloat and Adobe Cloud cancer, it is 500 times lighter.

PDN is great and easy to use, but it is not without its limitations.

THE ONLY FUCKING THING GIMP ISN'T CAPABLE OF DOING VS PHOTOSHOP is print-media high quality images (higher bit depth and better support for CMYK). THAT IS FUCKING IT. Everything -- EVERYTHING -- else is easily doable in Gimp, and just because you're a fucking baby duck and can't use new software because you've been weaned on another doesn't mean it's not able to do it.

I remember editing some random file to keep using Photoshop past the free trial without paying anything, so not everyone is using a pirated version.
I was only using it to edit raw files, and it was too much of a hassle to constantly edit that one file to do that one thing so I went looking for other software that allows you to easily open/edit/save raw files out of the box.

GIMP 2.10 supports high bit depths (up to 32-bit integer or 16-/32-bit float precision per channel) thanks to using GEGL for all functionality now.
Native CMYK support is still lacking, although you can at least specify a printer color profile for soft proofing (and convert images to the other color space in Krita for example, if you need to do photo manipulation and post-processing in separate steps anyway).

As I'm running Photoshop with Wine for a few years now, I don't wish for anything else than that. I wouldn't even mind paying for Photoshop on Linux at this point. Gimp is trash and fuck everyone saying otherwise, it's good for small-time stuff and even then the workflow is atrocious.

But I'm optimistic to future, especially with Krita being actually really really good software.

GIMP is ok, but you have to relearn a lot of stuff if you're used to Photoshop. Not an issue if you're learning on GIMP. It works in a pinch but even an older version of photoshop like cs6 is still way better.

Gimp is great for most personal and professional use cases, losing only on gigantic design industries and precise printing.
those who complain about gimp's usability should shut up and read The Book of Gimp or the manual. You need to learn the tool before effectively using it, this applies to any tool.

It works well, the functionality you want is there.

The GUI is fairly awful, controls are a little whacky and even the icons are fucky.
