Quake II is path-traced (ie, "fully" raytraced) in Vulkan, which is an open standard.

You can't have accurate full scene reflections without ray tracing. RTX does ray tracing with exactly the same math you would run on a CPU for an offline renderer. It's not fake in any way.

You had the change to keep your mouth shut, but yet you choose to ignore that. And not, raytracing not a gimmick, just natural progression of gaming. RTX is a gimmick in it's current state since basically nothing supports it, but RTX is not raytracing, just some kind of hardware accelerator since our current hardware isn't enough for real time raytracing.

Even Doom had some implementation of raytracing, the problem is emulating a whole 3D environment full of complex light sources and everything. We have been doing raytracing since ever, just look 3D animated movies. And of course they aren't rendered in real time.

You don't need double precision for raytracing... It's not like it's like some sort of strict physics simulation. The RT cores in Nvidia's RTX are basically low precision matrix multiplication accelerators. They have at least an order magnitude more throughput for that particular task than any GPU on the market using only the compute shaders.

You do realize...in order to do 100% full ray tracing...you need to calculate...ray tracing for every singe...photon of light? NVIDIA is using vector calculations in such a way as to simulate that with vertices, they're not physically tracking a single photon of light and then rendering the scene based on where that little bugger bounces of off and goes. Hence my comment about quantum computers, as you would require near infinite computing power to even accurately calculate all the possible photons of light that would exist in a single frame of rendering at any given moment.

...can be accomplished with the calculation of a single light ray. Nvidia's RTX cards can calculate much more than that, but for the sake of argument, you only need one. It doesn't even need to bounce to anything. And voila, you have fully authentic raytracing.

If you're talking about mainstream GPUs, the Radeon VII finally beat it because it feature 1:4 FP32 which amounts to 3.46 TFLOPS as opposed to the 1.07 TFLOPS that the 7970 was stuck at for a long time.

Their new sharpen filter is equal to AMD's FidelityFX now and can be adjusted and toggled per game. The driver also has integer scaling. AMD need to up their driver game.

Not him but I assume he meant that true Ray Tracing would involve stimulating all (infinite) paths the light could possibly take. Fortunately, we don't even need to do that since the viewpoint has a finite number of evenly spaced pixels.
