I have had an adlblocker on at all times for the last 10 years zoomer. I wouldn't know.

Besides mass advertising and popups, most sites are now offering premium subscription services with exclusive content. And just like there are idiots that don't use adblockers, there are even bigger idiots that pay for such services. But I guess it's like they say: God gave man two heads but only enough blood for one of them to work at a time

The cost per TB is insanely cheap these days, it's entirely possible to build a 3-4 PB worth of storage white boxed for under 30k these days. Streaming videos doesn't really require all that much CPU power, I'm sure some old 2950 dell power edges could still with ease host porn hub for most of it.

It also helps that most have virtually SLA, performance, or backup requirements. You greatly overestimate how shitty backend porn site infrasctructures are. Most important thing is bandwidth which is virtually pennies.

if the ads are soo cheap, why would websites like google and msn fill their pages with advertisements mixed in with their normal content? I am trying to understand why all the websites are becoming billboards and the content is lacking.

You're forgetting the fact that all those things require electricity to run. That's probably 90% of any hosting cost right there if you're doing anything to scale.

Because:

The reason is two-fold. Simply put, there's enough people using ad-blockers that in order to make any kind of profit, they have to pull out all of the stops to try and keep the site running. The second reason is that they can use third-party cookies to build a profile on you over time, which they bundle together with a lot of other people's info to sell to the highest bidder, who in turn, targets you for ads based on your preferences. Of course, anybody with a brain and the right tools can easily pick you out from that "anonomized" group of numbers.

We're approaching a time where the only websites left that produce content are independent peeps doing it for fun, boutique places that can rely on a dedicated group of people willing to pony up the cash, or mega-corps selling your data to sell you stuff to sell your data.
