wow, someone should, like, unionize

Nobody cares about side projects. You should be fine if you have a BS with good gpa

kek i had a job like that. I told them it was unenforceable. That stumped them for a day. But the next day I went in and they fired me, saying that that's how they are enforcing it. Got a very official letter of termination, my girlfriend was proud of me and put it on the refrigerator.

I still think it's bullshit when they demand rights to stuff done OFF of company time. Like you write a book, and suddenly the company takes all the royalties because you signed your life away to answer phones for $12/hour.

Do you then have a discussion about where it should be placed in a room?

That reminds me of those ridiculous non-compete agreements whereby they forbid you (or try to) from working for a different company in the same industry. Thankfully in practice those often have limited success, as it's the company which needs to prove that it's necessary for their genuine commercial interests (in regards to the amount of time ellapsed since the employee left, to the place of work and the exact type of work). The fact that they try to pull this shit (or that they're even allowed to pull this shit) is still insane though. I really wish white collar workers like codemonkeys and engineers would unionize.

California is actually the best for software devs. Non-competes are straight up illegal and even if you sign it if they try to enforce them you can take them to court and you will win every time. The only thing you can't do is steal trade secrets but that's a given anywhere in the US.

Neat, that should be the norm everywhere in North America.

no shit; same with shit like California's Anti-SLAPP laws.

Just use a pseudonym
Congrats, they no longer can take your things because XxXHors3FUcKeR98
is not employed by them.

oh yeah i totally forgot about that shit I signed. it's such horseshit, you finally get a job, then you're pressured to sign because you just want to start working and get money, and if you don't sign itll probably delay the hiring process another week best case they give in, worst case they just say take it or leave it.
i mean its not like any of my shit is worth anything, but its the principle. if i made it prior to hiring, or off company time its mine.

Too close to home

>Licence your projects under gpl or other open source licence
>sign the document
>fork your own project
This is my personal fork of your GPL licenced copyrighted work go fuck yourself.

>I really wish white collar workers like codemonkeys and engineers would unionize.
If they unionize that will just make AI that can program the highest priority on the list.

>American Factory (netflix)
>Chinese automobile glass company buys shut down GM plant in Detroit
>employees try to unionize
>Chinese company buys robots and replaces everyone

I usually tell I tinker around with Arduinos and Raspberry Pi's. Built a thermometer with an LCD and analogue clock, built a retro-pie. That's MIT level for HR people

Those only makes sense for a top manager like a CEO

it's a trade secret

Well eventually you run out of people w ho are fine with being treated like shit and the entire economy collapses because robots are doing everything,

whether they are chinese in china or americans in america everyone just wants cheap stuff now

i think the chinese summed it up pretty well when they were analysing american behavior in their company meetings:

I'll paraphrase
>The Americans love to be flattered to death. There's this thing in the culture that starts from a young age where everyone has to be encouraged all the time and be told that they're doing a good job. It really over-inflates their ego and makes them overly confident.
You're not being treated like shit. You're being treated like 1/7,500,000,000th (and still growing smaller) of the world's population. You are being treated normally. Get over yourself. Prices of labor are going down.

same guy: i'm 29, own a home, car (cash) and have no debt. it's not hard if you have a job and don't spend money on alcohol or drugs

Dont end up like the guy who made kerbal.
Always read the small shit on your contract.

ain't that a bitch
lucky you

well my only debt is the mortgage, but it's only 1/6th of my income. also i dropped out of the college meme

>sign over the rights to all your IP generated on or off company time
Yeah, good luck trying to enforce the "off" bit.

Aren't they illegal?
I have a non-compete in my contract but it's valid only for the time of employment at the current company ie I can't work two jobs.

>I'm building a fully riced custom water-cooled PC with overpriced hardware

that wouldn't work since you'd still be the author of the code therefore have the right to relicense it. You need to sign it off to FSF (which they recommend anyways) too.

if you use horsefucker as your git handle chances are you're not writing anything of value anyway.

>yeah im currently in software but i use my time off to work on chip designs in HSPICE to get into the hardware field
easy

>just quit your job
t. american

I made the mistake of sharing many of the major projects that I was doing for fun and the company wanted me to integrate them with only pennies for bonus.

Before I wrote my contract I verified that all software i dont write on company time belongs to me and they agreed. If they would've said no i would have said fuck off and thrown that contract in the trash. Good that i dont live in murrica

You know, next time I am at an interview and I realize that I'm not going to get the job (you all know this feeling), I'm going to do this just for the reactions. Thanks for the idea. :)

I have actually had a hiring manager tell me that they don't want me working on side projects lol.

>yeah, my side projects are to sleep 8 hours a day, exercise and care about mental health, so I don't burn out too quickly

This. Only cucks do it otherwise.

8 is too much, you can cut it down ti 7-7.5.

My job security is flirtatiously bullying by betamale coworkers. I just got promoted.
