VR

so is it fair to say the top headsets right now are
>valve index
>oculus quest

>t. vive user gonna update to index

Valve Index is top of the line for sure, amazing headset.

i agree
BUT CAN IT DO THIS
youtu.be/0QUPuNql_Bs

>valve index
>no oled screen
man i love looking up at the beautiful night sky and seeing dark grey

Honestly worth it. There's close to zero SDE.

>Valve Index
>"Not available in your country"
I just want to die.

Index is definitely top of the line, but I don't know about Oculus Quest - I think it's not much better than Rift really.

I'd say Vive Pro (eye) or Vive Cosmos are the other one or two alternatives with best hardware, aside from Valve Index.

the quest is selling like fuckin hotcakes
i'd say 80% of the people playing pokerstars are runnin quest

soon brother

when is Rift 2 coming out? I want to be able to use Oculus exclusive programs (Quill and Medium) but Rift's resolution is shit

Not soon, probably. For confirmation, Oculus Connect will likely have more updated info near the end of the month.

Rift S screen is a huge upgrade over Rift.

>worse in every way
>huge upgrade

Facebook doesn't want you wasting your marketing budget here, shoo shoo!

I said screen you mong.

cringe

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>worse in every way
>still better than $500 Viveshit

go back to your containment board

fuck off vive is good

It was good in 2016. Buying one today is beyond retarded.

>LCD
>80Hz

Again, nice try

why

LCD has more subpixels therefore much better perceived resolution over OLED panels. In combination with higher resolution overall the difference is massive.

80Hz vs 90Hz is inconceivable and keeps the requirements down.

Worst SDE among all headsets, terrible ergonomics (controllers, comfort), no built-in audio, close to no customer support and yet still costs more than most headsets today. Just a bad choice in 2019.
ViVe Cosmos is coming out later this year, if they price it right - it might bring HTC back to the game.

>available in my country but still prohibitively expensive

is local multiplayer in vr (with 2 headsets, ofc) a thing?

Attached: 1558429804509.jpg (1080x1744, 700K)

Not really. You still need internet connection, or Wifi if you're using Quest

i'll be getting a Rift S in a while. i can't justify $1000 on an Index, especially when the controllers seem to be falling apart already and the Rift S is $600 cheaper for almost the same experience.

I thought the main selling point of the Index was the awesome controllers.

Jeez, who's that qt, bruv?

according to a couple vr nerds i talked to (they are *way* too invested in vr, have full body tracking gear and play vrchat for hours every day) the index controllers have poorer ergonomics and face buttons than the rift s' controller and the finger tracking, while awesome, is less intuitive than the rift s' controller (which, to be fair, doesn't track all fingers like the index.)
ledditors have also been complaining that their controllers are falling apart after just a few months of use, and since i live in the jungle i doubt valve would care enough to offer warranty in case mine broke.
with that in mind it doesn't seem like the index is the obvious choice for me. ymmv, especially in regards to warranty.

idk, sorry

meant for

The internal tracking of the rift S is a far more attractive feature to me.

How excited are these nerds for eye tracking?

Weird way to spell downgrade.

read and then go die in a hole

Yeah well it would be if they didn't ditch proper trackpad at the last second in favor of a shitty stick.
Obviously when you design software around something and you change it before release it's gonna be bad.
Every one bitching about muh trackpad that ain't even that bad (it worked really well with the vive wands), now we have a botchered trackpad and a shitty fragile stick.
Well fucking done

Retard
He is only right about lcd.
80hz is noticable
Inside out tracking is bad for now (dead angles, freaks out if one camera is obstructed)
New touch controllers are less ergonomic as a result
No ipd ajustment (no software doesn't count)

>Rift S screen is a huge upgrade over Rift.

>Rift S SCREEN is a huge upgrade over Rift.
kys

Just use a mail forwarding service. You might spend $50-100 more but it's not a big deal if you're already dropping $1k.

Kek sorry
I'm not even out of bed
But to be honest the screen is not that big of an upgrade, and the other rift s downsides are too big
Not worth it

not as much as for face tracking for some reason
theyre probably too niche since their thing is vrchat

You can only order via steam and they lock you out if you're not in Europe or us

VR needs foveated rendering to be a thing. Every bit of performance counts because high FPS and refresh rate is necessary to combat motion sickness side-effect.

we're 10 years too early for quality vr headset but do beta test these trashes. New tech always needs rich guinea pigs.

Both still struggle to match Microsoft VR headsets, LMAO.

VR is a meme gimmick fad that is already over.

My buddy has the quest and while I would never spend the money on a stand alone headset myself, it's a fucking solid price of hardware. Every game I've played on it works great, visually everything is clear as fuck compared to my headset (windows mixed reality Lenovo version) and it lasts 2 hours on a single charge which isn't that bad.

The biggest drawback is that you're stuck with fucking occulus store games and that's it's. You can't mod shit like beat saber to get the most out of it, and it's not really set up for some shit since as far as I'm aware you can't attach any other controllers to it, and sim shit is like the primary reason to keep one IMO. I imagine people not into sim racing/flying get much less use out of their VR since every VR game I've played only lasts like 2 hours unless it's multiplayer

I bought rift s just because I wanted to try out VR. It's amazing. And playing beat saber made me loose me weight too. Well spent money.

doubt it

Is face tracking even a patented idea at this point?

maybe if you're poor

woah. this guy is playing vr outside. why didn't I think of that!?

I just bought a rift S and this thing is fucking rad. the cable coming off the headset does suck though, I imagine thats the biggest benefit of the Quest.

I played Gorn all day yesterday and I literally punched my wall so many times my controllers have white wall paint on them and one off my fingernails got all jammed up and started bleeding.

Any rift S users out there know how to make this headset less glitchy with Windows 10. If I boot up the computer fresh everything works fine. But If I take off my headset for a few minutes, then try to put it back on its like my motion controls still work but the game is frozen up completely. If I take it back off again its like every app in windows is freezy and glitchy. I pretty much have to restart the computer any time I want to use the rift, and unplug the headset from the usb port and restart the computer again any time I want to switch back to regular PC use.

Its pretty fucking annoying DESU

whats worse about it?
The fact that it doesn't have any external room sensors seems like a big deal to me.
I've had hardly any problems at all with controller tracking but this rift S is my first headset so I cant compare.
Graphics seem to be really good, I can read text just fine. The built in speakers suck but all built in speakers on every single device ever made sucks

Lol the next generation of headset literally just got released, and they're more affordable than ever.
how are you gonna try to claim that its a fad thats already over?

VR is a meme

no u

oleds in vr headsets are tuned to do greys, never blacks, to compensate for the refresh problems of oled, faggit

Oculus Quest has no games (unless you count angry birds as a game)

Make sure to disable power management on the USB port. Disable usb selective suspend. If possible, have as few devices as possible on the usb controller it's on to ensure you have enough bandwidth. Use usbtreeview to figure this out. If you're not on the public test channel opt in. If you are, opt out. I find one or the other can be too buggy at times.

Oh and the rare times this happens to me, I can usually fix it without rebooting by

(1) unplug and replug hdmi/usb
(2) restart oculus service

Is vrporn good?

We need a detailed response to the above post.

it's probably just weebshit

The HP reverb has he best resolution, but you’re stuck with those shitty wmr controllers

Seconded

Can’t get a clear answer anywhere. Even if this isn’t the first thing you’d try, I’ve gotten replies from people who have had a go or quest for months that say “lol I don’t know man I haven’t tried it.”

Sorry what? Your on virtual reality for months and it never once occurred to you to at least LOOK at some titties? Are vr owners all fags?

I'm a vive owner too and yeah, the Index is the top of the line right now. It looks like HTC is going to fail out of the space and make a floundering attempt at the enterprise side, and Valve is going to take their place.
Facebook will keep making oculus models that trade performance and accuracy for normie comforts like no base stations and no computer tether.

Eye tracking needs foveated rendering and a retard-proof API to reach its potential. VRChat is the current use case that should benefit most from today's eye tracking, but the devs are retarded.

Average developers haven't figured out how to make good use of it yet, and we're going to need a set of standardized best practices for them to copy, much like how it took a long time for them to figure out locomotion.

>The built in speakers suck but all built in speakers on every single device ever made sucks
What? The original Rift had very good built-in headphones and the Index speakers are even impressing the audiophiles. Are you a Facebook employee?

Can someone let me know if there is a VR headset that lets you view your surroundings without having to swivel the headset up? I was thinking of something that, at the very least, I don't need to move every time I need to fiddle with something in my room. I was also considering augmented reality like Google Glass.

>No WebVR support for Linux
fuck

Index and Vive Pro have stereoscopic passthrough cameras that do that. Maybe some others do too.

I would love to hack together my windows MR with the Oculus Go lenses. Similar to the HTC vive SamsungVR hack. HP reverb just isn't quite there for lenses, such a shame.

OLED screen door is a lot worse, do you even subpixel bro?

As someone who never used VR tell me if it's worth it for watching media

>HTC vive SamsungVR hack
First time hearing about this. Has anyone tried it with the Valve Index yet? I've been noticing a lot of god rays and peripheral clarity issues with the stock lenses.

Only if you plan to never go back to pancake.

Define media. I don't think anything designed to be watched on a traditional 2D screen is improved by watching in VR but made-for-VR media is really cool.

I ised the Vive and the "screendoor" scanlines made everything gray anyway.

Not that I'm aware of, I'm too scared to even attempt this as a major fuckup would render both my devices unable to view porn.

so don't fuck up?

Youtube and Netflix. All I have is a Thinkpad X220 and no TV. Was thinking of getting the Oculus Quest to lie in bed and watch shit

Are you old enough to remember sitting too close to an analogue TV? If you can deal with the small amount of screen door (like sitting too close to the oldschool TVs) then yes. My Oculus Go is even better than my Windows MR due to better panel and WAY better lenses. It's like having a personal movie theater and makes 3D movies more enjoyable thanks to removing the need for shutter or polaroid lenses.

Nobody has ever done an Oculus Go to windows MR lens swap and I don't own a 3D printer. At least the Vive to GearVR swap has parts and tutorials available.

>he needs a tutorial and a 3D printer to do hardware mods
C'mon, kid. Grab your calipers and a file and do it the old fashioned way.

No. I like having PC VR and portable VR. I fly away for work all the time. I would love to see a 2160p headset with lenses of generation 1.5 Oculus quality though.

Are the lenses you're talking about better than GearVR or just what you have on hand? I found a GearVR at Goodwill for $3 a while back so if your concern is just not having a backup they're easy to come by.

I would use Oculus Go lenses because they're great and they're on hand. Gear VR lenses needed to be a specific year/model of Gear VR if I remember correctly, I don't have a Vive so I never followed it up. I would suggest google/youtube for more info from someone like Sweviver..

>controllers hyped up to be the second coming of Jesus Christ
>they can pinch hands and cause discomfort
>analogue stick "push down to click" inherently broken
>stupid touch pad right in the middle of where your thumb wants to use buttons and stick
>most non-valve titles didn't even update in preparation for launch

All of this so I can give "the finger" in unpopulated multiplayer games that suck anyway? Yeah nah.

Rift S does this too. It automatically turns on whenever you are outside the play area, aka "guardian" system. And at pretty good perspective though in this weird black and white.

I had the Lenovo VR headset previously, particularly because of the easy flip up, that had pass through but it was like trying to operate while looking through a camera at 2x zoom.

I had a vive for a while and sold it.
If I can I'm going to wait for DXR performance to come up to VR performance levels before I buy a new headset.

I watch various movies/shows/anime in 720 to 1080 on my Rift S. Screendoor is still there, like with every VR headset, but you have to be looking for it or you'll never notice it. I also watch some 3D videos on it (last one was The Martian) which makes me often wish I had plumped for the full resolution versions rather than halfSDS. Recently purchased the Alita: Battle Angel 4K + 3D BD set (which puts most other 3D rotoscoped crap to shame) and ripped it into VR simulated megascreen viewing glory.
