Dumb things you used to think about computers

who here
>didn't browse Jow Forums for years because they were scared they were gonna get hacked

I..I can't be the only one right?

You aren't, there are plenty of people who have special needs OP :)

>scared they were gonna get hacked
How do you know that you werent hacked?
You need to have some extensive knowledge to
determine if a machine is compromised.
Bearing in mind that some hacks merely
infect a computer and then the payload remains
dormant for months or years till the hacker needs it

I thought there was some super special magic about CDs because of how you installed programs and OS from them back in the day. Plus how when you popped them in they would automatically start.

"Loading bars" are a timed event and rich people pay for faster load times.

Interesting POV.

> He doesn't know

I realised I was right but indirectly.

when I was underage somebody with the same IP got banned for posting A+S that was the same as mine on /soc/ or something
spooked me pretty good thought I got hacked

That's funny because Jow Forums has been consumerist central for more than a decade now. Anyone who knows their shit left aeons ago.

Oldfag Jow Forums, yes.
Newfag and cancerfag Jow Forums? No.

Ram related...
>Changing the RAM means you have to re-install your OS
>You can't use different RAM sticks
Misc...
>Don't run PC on April 26
>Wait at least 3 minutes between shutdown and turn on

not entirely computer related but I have a similar story to that last one
>have to turn off all electronics during a thunderstorm
I remember sitting in darkness, waiting for the storm to finish so I can go back to playing my game

semi related

I don't understand how sleeping works. Doesn't the OS just churn the CPU with
while(time.now() != event.time()) //....
How does an operating system or kernel know to sleep a certain amount of time?

it constantly goes trough all processes and checks if they need to be awakened
t. had one lecture about kernel years ago

Is linear complexity the best we can do? The OS is supposed to go through all processes in less than 1ms?!

It isn't dumb if your electrical infrastructure is shit.
One neighbor had a little storm from his sockets when the thunder hit (like what happens when you remove the socket from a device still turned on).

>Windows XP running slow
>right click on the desktop
>refresh
>refresh
>refresh
>refresh
>refresh

Never understood what refresh do.

Keeping side panel open was kept the temperatures down better

I think it's supposed to refresh the icons on the desktop
so If you chnaged something on your desktop folder and somehow the change wasn't synced you press refresh and it appears
What I don't get is why they kept this weird temporary solution in every iteration of windows. You'd think that any sync issue would be fixed by now

Press F5

>I'm using all my RAM when lots of programs are open that means that I don't have enough

ram makes your computer faster

You're the only one, nobody else is that retarded.
