Not even a bad thing, it'll make Macs faster, pave the way for Microsoft to do something similar (sandbox maybe), and piss off macfags all at the same time

lmao

even Steam on Mac doesn't have a 64-bit client yet

What an absolute circus of a company.

I don't think Valve has put together a 64-bit Steam client at all.

Looks like Apple wants to simplify the OS' code and force developers to take advantage of 64 bit. Who was gaming on Macs anyways?

>"who wants those sour grapes anyway"

Attached: 1567223616806.png (340x314, 236K)

When are we getting the Gold&Silver of PCs where they make a cutting-edge snowflake OSs for a cutting-edge snowflake architecture and murder all compatibility options?

Adapt or die.

While i hate apple, I do like that they are the first to set the standards for the future, even if it means pissing off a lot of their user base in the process. The only ones I really hated from them were the 3.5mm jack loss and notch. High pixel density in phones and laptops was good. USB-C is okay other than fragmentation in how companies implement it and the garbage locking mechanism. Death of 32-bit is fine as well, and will eventually mean the death of ARM on Windows (again), which is overpriced garbage. I was hoping Qi would get more adoption but Chinese companies just go full blast with 50W+ charging that kills your battery in months. And no, Qi isn't bad for the battery when you let it charge as slowly as possible overnight (

Based Apple getting rid of legacy bloat and pissing the 10 tards who didn't get the memo and use their Mac for gayming at the same time.

>Gold&Silver
FireRed&LeafGreen
sorry

Just wait next years Apple kills OpenGL and OpenCL support, every scientist and medical software visualization dead.

>fragmentation in how companies implement it
USB 4 should fix it in the future, since it's TB speed from the start and uses the same connector.

install 64bit vmware or virtualbox to use 32bit programs

Why purpose would 64 bit addresses serve for a glorified launcher program?

They pretty much did it already. Why using this slow shit when Metal is there?

>Folks,
Stopped reading right there

they need to update the unix utilities in their userland to this decade first.

Emerald is better

For the overlay UI, chat, screenshot manager, game manager, shitty chromium browser, game server, download manager, etc.

Medical and scientist apps begin mostly close code made by few non-programmers research, these apps won't be rewritten for Metal support.

There are those rumors, pretty strong rumors, that Apple is going to abandon x86 and move the Mac to their own ARM-based chips. They can run x86 programs, but naturally the translation layer creates a performance hit. So, Apple wants to kill 32-bit programs because they're old and unmaintained. 64-bit programs are more recent, so it's easier to tell their developers: look, we use ARM now, go patch your program to make it ARM-native.

Attached: 8b1.png (680x510, 1.34M)

It wouldn't, apple is just too pedantic to understand how important backwards compatibility is for users and devs. 64-bit binaries are actually harder to write and often need more time to be debugged. That's why half the time even if a dev writes 64-bit versions of their software the 32-bit one is sometimes more stable and reliable.

Half of those get their own 32-bit processes.

>so it's easier to tell their developers: look, we use ARM now, go patch your program to make it ARM-native.
That's just asking for another windows RT disaster.

Attached: 3fe.gif (569x510, 5K)

Is there a single 32bit program that I will miss?

I'm using steam on Catalina beta right now.

The same arguments came when they switched to 64bit on phones. If small app developers had no issues, no one has any excuse.

Xiaomi has 100W

Unlike Microsoft, Apple has proven able to move architectures (Power to x86, Motorola to Power, etc) without breaking everything forever.

Nope, 64-bit SoCs fully support 32-bit apps which most apps are still built on. The play store will simply stop delivering 64-bit apps to users who have 64-bit phones in the future, 32-bit apps will still be there for those who need them and all apps outside the play store will probably remain 32-bit for a while.

Doesn't matter, devs already moan and groan about releasing 64-bit binaries. Rewriting their entire programs to run on ARM and do so with the greatest level of optimizations possible won't end well. The entire crux of ARM has always been and will continue to be it has terrible performance/watt and is a huge pain to write software for. That's why you don't see it being widely used for servers or HPCs.

RT was a disaster because it could not run old programs at all. Recent ARM chips can run x86 programs, albeit with a performance hit.

Well, I absolutely hope Apple jumps the shark so hard they go bankrupt and need to resurrect Steve Jobs as an AI to unfuck them again. I also think that's vanishingly unlikely.

Not just that but performance hit per core which means the abysmal single threaded performance of ARM is greatly magnified.

If anything, they're on the right track especially with their new meme credit card. They're basically bribing dumb poorfags with free(tm) money to get their products and start using apple pay everyone forgot about. iPhone sales haven't been good and macbooks are blowing up (literally) all over the world. FAA and multiple airlines already banned them from going on planes and train stations are considering the same.

Aren't most applications on mac 64bit anyway? The last machine that was 32bit was released like 15 years ago. 32bit releases have been kept around for those obsolete machines but most applications contain both 64bit and 32bit binaries.

see Also they'res like 10 years worth of software used by millions that never got a 64-bit binary or did but never got it properly debugged.

It also functionally ends WINE support dead. If you think I'm meming go to WineHQ forums.

>USB 4 should fix it in the future
You're mixing a USB standard with a connector. How many USB-C phones even support USB 3.0+ right now? The only phone I recall for certain that had USB 3.0 were the Samsung ones years ago with the ugly micro-usb 3.0 connector. OEMs don't care, they're mostly stuck on USB 2.0 for data. They were only forced to transition to USB-C because the internet when crazy when new devices came out still using micro-usb. There's a hundred different charging standards on USB-C, and some peripherals (or devices) aren't even fully reversible (or compatible). I have two phones and one tablet with USB-C. The 3.5mm adapter for one works for two devices and the 3.5mm adapter for another only works with that device. USB-C cables might not even be made to spec, etc. The list goes on. Read comments here:

It's less about old programs but lack of benefits in performance/price/battery life, and having only subpar apps. Not something Apple has to worry about.

But there are ARM servers and since last year the PPW is better than Intel, at least on low power chips.

imagine following ubuntu.

>patch your program to make it ARM-native
>patch

Yeah but Apple's so big and so rich they could operate as a charity for the next decade. They don't even need to make money at this point.

They had about two years when Applel actually announced their plans for a change. If I remember right, initially Mojave was supposed to kill 32bit but they changed their mind and gave people one more fucking year.

>But there are ARM servers and since last year the PPW is better than Intel, at least on low power chips.
Barely and PPW is nowhere near enough to hold a candle even to old xeons. But none of this really matters because rewriting software to ARM is a nightmare especially if you want server software that has to be super stable and reliable 24/7. This is why the only real place ARM will ever be seen is data centers just like POWER.

>t'll make Macs faster
[citation needed]
32-bit execution on x86 is literally zero overhead, while just about everything that actually benefits from long mode already takes advantage of it. It's a PR stunt/laziness and nothing more.

Depends on whether you liked running Windows porn games or not.
>Rewriting their entire programs to run on ARM and do so with the greatest level of optimizations possible
Changing targets from PPC to Intel was a flag in most cases. It didn't hurt that the switch happened when the Intel architecture could match AltiVec.

>because rewriting software to ARM is a nightmare
Hence project Catalyst, with the benefit that devs can sell apps for Mac and iPad Pro and at worst recover the cost; while more likely than not benefiting from a larger market.

Nope, they have accrued over 100 Billion dollars of debt and most of their money is essentially in the form of credit and can't be easily used. Also if investors pull out, their stock collapses and all their money disappears into thin air. They can't just suddenly "stop" being apple without consequences.

Oh shit I didn't realize Apple was that leveraged. Maybe they shouldn't fuck things up out of laziness constantly.

It won't magically make their code run as close to ARM metal as possible, just run on ARM. That's not enough for devs as ARM single threaded performance is still ~5 gens behind intel laptop processors even on apple's A12 chips.

>But there are ARM servers
There really aren't outside of SBCs and internal megacorporate cloudshit solutions. It's all vaporware no matter what handful of names the cheerleaders endlessly drop.

>It didn't hurt that the switch happened when the Intel architecture could match AltiVec.

The debt is there to pay their investors. It's basically money. And in times of brainlets like Trump, they could easy use their reserves too without notable penalties.

Not like any of this shit makes any sense in reality when they dominate every market they are in and keep growing in wearables, iPads and services. Their store makes so much money, they could release next ten iPhone for free and wouldn't get a massive financial hit.

I'm going to stay in Mojave until it completely loses support. After that I'll move to Linux.

>ARM single threaded performance is still ~5 gens behind intel laptop processors even on apple's A12 chips.
Yet A12X runs away from chips with 2,5 the TDP in any real task? What is there even to worry about.

You don't understand corporations at all, little tommy. When apple suddenly stops being apple investors will pull out since their stock won't grow anymore. This is bad because all of apple's monopoly money hinges on the fact that investors think apple will make more money soon(tm). If they don't and take out their money especially so fast it creates panic the stock drops even more and then investors will panic further as their money starts to vanish into thin air as well.

Are they not using x86_64 architecture? Don't they get 32 bit for free?

this ancient shit gets regurgitated a lot by retards who never read it

>When apple suddenly stops being apple
Something they don't have to worry about in realistic scenarios but even with something as extreme as free iPhones, it'll make people spend more on apps and their services, buy Beats and Watches and whatever else. Their ecosystem is unmatched and will keep printing money.

Finally, let that ball drop.

Attached: iToddlers BTFO.gif (498x278, 1.69M)

That uber low TDP comes at a massive cost: performance and difficulty for devs optimizing code for it. Basically the more RISC you go the less hand holding will take place by the compiler and now you're expected to be 1337 in assembly. Couple that with ARM's inherently bad single threaded performance and not only are you now forced to optimize the shit out of your code for ARM metal but do so on 4 fucking processors at the same time. This is why 99% of ARM "apps" suck balls, they're either copy pasted code or existing CLI software with a shitty GUI wrapper. Nobody has ever picked up an iPad "pro" and honestly thought they were going to get work done on it.

if it makes macs faster then it’s a good thing though?

Macs have always suffered from being able to run way less software. Making it worse does not seem wise but then again half the users are just using as them as fashion accessories anyway.

>I don't read threads before posting in them
return to reddit

>Nobody has ever picked up an iPad "pro" and honestly thought they were going to get work done on it.
Except artists who have functionally abandoned Wacom altogether

Their cash cow IS iPhones. You do realized it's like $200 worth of chinkshit parts being sold with hundreds of dollars worth of markup, right? Times a hundred million or so.

am I the first person to say
>muh games

I DON'T KNOW REDDIT, MAYBE READ THE THREAD FIRST

Like I said, nobody picks one up and actually thinks they're going to get work done.

Attached: Capture-4.jpg (756x623, 52K)

> iPad "pro" and honestly thought they were going to get work done on it.
Yet it renders 4k video faster than any non-workstation laptop. Same with image editing and audio. If it could run code, there is zero reason to suspect it wouldn't be at least as fast as some 25W Intel. Obviously same in easy tasks like browsing. It has a weird I/O and OS but literally zero performance issues despite laughable RAM and being passively cooled.

>This is why 99% of ARM "apps" suck balls
Most apps sucks balls, whatever architecture they use.

It's getting less and less relevant for them. Didn't it move to below 50% recently?

>artist being paid like shit is relevant
Nigga, what?

>Yet it renders 4k video faster than any non-workstation laptop.
That's because it uses HW accelerated video encoding which requires 8-10X the bitrate for the same visual quality.

What stops Intel from having a decent hardware encoding?

NOBODY. EVER. PICKS. ONE. UP. AND. ACTUALLY. THINKS. THEY'RE. GOING. TO. GET. WORK. DONE.

IF. I. SAY. IT. IN. CAPS. IT'S. TRUE.
you do you

They do, they've had it for a while too. But it has the same problem, the video requires 8-10X the nominal bitrate of video encoded with the CPU.

Attached: gpu-03.png (1281x699, 253K)

But all these artists get work done, they just don't get paid well for it. The ones who can't get their work on an iPad Pro have tons of different reasons, performance isn't one.

Gamers are truly the most oppressed people.

Fuck Macs.

Clearly theirs isn't working very well if a passively cooled chip runs circles around it.

Also why the fuck would be higher bitrate a problem for anyone even semi-professional?

this isn't the Stupid Questions General

That doesn't make his statement any less true. Millions of artists draw cocks on their favorite childhood female character every day on whatever medium they want to use but they don't do it as job. It's not work.

this

Only complete idiots like Dobson play games on Macs.

The chart is clearly about artists who do it as a job.

You can absolutely make a living drawing women with cocks fucking each other, and the more fetishes you add the higher the commission

Furries can make fucking bank doing it, I guarantee there's furry artists making more than you do

Attached: wrong.gif (220x199, 99K)

Not him but drawing cocks is not a "job".

If people are willing to pay for your cocks it is.

I recall reading that their IDE makes it pretty much automatic.

First of all, old white males don't have a quantified definition of what "Apple" is. To them, it's just that place Steve Jobs used to work at. This means your argument that investment will be scared away is moot because investors can claim just anything isn't "Apple" and leave, this has never happened. It's like claiming a meteor is going to make your next life decision irrelevant.

Second of all, Apple is a useless company that exists entirely on PR and marketing, and that means they can spin anything they do into "Apple". Their big innovation that returned the company to glory was the iPod, which was just an MP3 player with a wheel interface.

Third of all, the guy you're replying to JUST POINTED OUT that the debt in question is just there in case of investor panic, plus Apple has a rainy day fund larger than any other corporation's. Their revenues alone guarantee they'd survive an investor panic with their core products intact unless the cause of the investor panic was loss of core products.

Consider the following: Arm chiplets

Gay

If you get a paycheck directly from the cock you draw then it's a job, especially if it pays all your bills and makes you financially profitable.

ARM Holder put 64 core ARM in 350mm^2

If Arm deploys chiplets and Apple adopts them then AMD and Intel are finished

>if facebook toddler toys just do [buzzword] then real computers are finished!
Gay

Yeah. I'm worried too, All my older macs will vanish next month.

>leftypol is a nigger lesbian itoddler
it makes sense now

>pave the way for Microsoft to do something similar
You can bet your ass that there's going to be a mass exodus from Windows 10 back to Windows 7 and 8.1 if Microshaft decides to destroy backwards compatibility.

Based

> macrumors.com

Found your problem.

This is the company that had to do exchange support without help from MS and had to include proprietary cisco vpn support because they couldn't be asked to do anything for three years. Culls like this are a good thing.
