looking to try out linux again after not using it for almost a decade.

Any advice or recommendations? I`m thinking if trying Manjaro with XFCE.

Manjaro XFCE had screen tearing problems even on 4.14 and just did not feel complete, it's a hard feeling to explain. I recently switched to gnome and it's fine. MATE is pretty good also if you want a windows like desktop experience.

Oh really? thanks for the heads up. Guess I`ll use Gnome for the moment.

Manjaro is a solid choice.

arch with kde.

Tip, I found pacmac (Pacman GUI) always freeze and give me problems, use the command line when installing programs and stuff

Get Debian the only Linux distro approved by Jow Forums.

OP, the plus side of this is that all the software will still be exactly the same was when you quit using Linux a decade ago.

unpopular opinion: mainline ubuntu is actually pretty nice with enough tlc

I used to use mainline ubuntu. That is tempting.

I just swapped out a development release of Ubuntu for Debian 10.1, wanted stability after cutting myself on the bleeding edge. It's pretty nice.

Doesn't have tearing on AMD/Intel.

I still got tearing on Intel integrated and Amd ATI Mobility Radeon HD with XFCE 4.14

it sounds like you're not 100% sure which DE you want - I recommend trying a bunch of them to get a feel for what you want

bruh just use mint

Good choice op, xfce is light and comfy and just werks. I've never experienced the screen tearing issue myself, but if you do I'd recommend using MATE, not gnome or kde.

Deepin

This. It would finish downloading a package then just freeze and refuse to close, which means I couldn't use pacman from the terminal, even after killing pacmac.

xubuntu lts
apt install arc-theme

use VMs
just use some *buntu. I like Kubuntu, you could try Neon as well.

>just did not feel complete
>so I switched to a DE with fewer features than XFCE

debian + XFCE or use Xubuntu. don't do arch or manjaro if you haven't linuxed in a while

If you gave up the first time, maybe arch isn't for you.

Enlightenment, maybe?

errr elementary

Oh, really? Hmmm, maybe xubuntu then. Thanks.

Don`t like the sound of some of that. Thanks.

If you want a GUI heavy experience try a distro with KDE. Kubuntu, KDE Neon, OpenSUSE. A casual user has no advantage using XFCE unless you're on a toaster.
