you can disable update service but windows will turn it back after delay. You think you're done with that crap, but one day you boot up your computer and see it updates. Is it stupid and users fault?

Yes, you CAN tell windows to fuck off, but 1) it requires you to download 3rd party firewall (simplewall) 2) it requires you to waste at least 30 minutes of your time switching shit in registry and group policy 3) probably you also have to download 3rd party shit from github to disable parts that do not have any options at all.
May be this is stupid and also users fault?

There is no users fault that they do not possess knowledge that microsoft forcibly tries to HIDE from them (and the law is what stops them to do so). You think you switch an option and you're done, but in reality your OS does shady walkaround shit that has nothing in common with what option says. You have to google and read USER experience of how to do what you want to, not official docs - and even microsoft support is just a bunch of retards who post unrelated templated answers, but the user who already got through this the hard way will give you the real answer.

This is why Windows is retarded: not because it's just Windows itself, but because Microsoft takes you, a PeeCee user, as a sheeple who must use defaults and obey to whatever shit comes from 'home', even if it's literally untested and breaks your install. And now retards call everyone stupid for not figuring out workarounds of unbroking the broken OS. Nothing new.

linux does not have the "problem" of forced updates because there's so little to do on it, people check for updates by themselves. windows allows for so much sustained productivity and entertainment, people keep postponing updates to the point of not updating at all unless forced to. hence the status quo of actual forced updates

gahnoo+loonix

it's really the users' fault for indefinitely postponing updates, and then blaming Microsoft for being insecure and susceptible to vulnerabilities (many of which were actually patched, should one install the updates on time)

Ryan Taylor

No, linux doesn't have the problem because you can update while using the system, and choose when to reboot (only necessary if the kernel's been updated). Software that's updated will continue to work and you just need to restart the software to get the new version.
And unlike Windows, there's no splash screen you're stuck waiting at. Rebooting after a kernel update takes exactly as long as a normal reboot, and a normal reboot is faster than a normal Windows reboot.

Not if you disable fast startup. A reboot inherently is slower because it doesn't use hibernation. I can hibernate Linux just as well and don't need to reboot nearly as often.

kernel boots in several seconds without ssd. If you tweak your shit it can boot in 300ms (look up for article from Intel). The rest depends on how much bloated is your distro. Because 99% of Windows is already shut down by the time it actually says "shutting down". It's sent out the shutdown signals to all the system services, and all that's left is the disk cache and drivers.
Now, unless you have something horribly wrong with your hard disk (another outside possibility, but ridiculously unlikely given your CHKDSK and SMART results) - that leaves the drivers.
once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains - no matter how improbable - must be the truth

Alexander Smith

Stockholm Syndrome would imply that I have no choice but to use Windows. I did use Linux, for a time, as it were. In fact, I moved to Windows 10 after a year or so of using Linux.
I would say that Linux is the true stockholm syndrome in this case. You're not actually obligated to use it, but you feel an obligation to use it, for whatever reason.
I felt kind of like that. I did put up with Linux's bullshit for a while. And for a while, it was nice to have something snappier than Windows, that boots and shuts down quickly, and where I can customize everything.
But after a while I began to grow weary of the glitchiness. Poor performance, or games straight up not launching. DEs where the start menu would crash, or where electron apps would be unusable, or where the tray would be filled with copies of the same icons, or where the window manager would hang if I opened more than one instance of Spectacle, or where windows would become transparent and unusable.

I do wish Windows gave you as much freedom as Linux. But on Windows, shit actually fucking works from the get-go, without me having to launch shit through the terminal with a million arguments, or messing around with conf files, and I actually have software I can install, which matters to me more than being able to theme.

It's not operator error. How could you even have operator error for such a simple installer? If I select everything I want to install and click through the dialogues and it puts me in a loop without any error message, that's Microsoft's fault.

I've got it working by using the VS command line tools installer, it'll just take a while.

that leaves the drivers.
Fair enough, but I didn't exactly install any custom drivers for the hard drive. If the drivers Windows Update selects are crap, then that's on Microsoft. Wouldn't be the first time: randomascii.wordpress.com/2012/09/04/windows-slowdown-investigated-and-identified/

I sure as hell know how to operate sdksetup.exe and fix obscure MS software errors, because I just did. It's just slow since I'm on a spinning disk.
The steps were:
1. Uninstall command line windows sdk from VS Build tools installer.
2. Upgrade VS Build tools.
3. Reinstall command line windows sdk from VS Build tools installer
4. Run sdksetup.exe again, this time it works.
You don't think it's reasonable for Microsoft to include an error message if shit fails rather than just silently turning into a loop telling you to go to a folder and execute the file there?

Leo Bennett
Leo Bennett

If you need to dedicate a machine or VM to a dev environment to get a clean working environment, that's a failure on the part of the software maker. This could easily happen on a dev machine if you have multiple sdk versions coexisting and change your environment.
Regardless, I wasn't even complaining that much about the mere existance of an error like this---that's just par for the course for Windows and why you have dedicated dev machines/VMs--- I just think that if something fucks up the software should let me know with a message. Even a vague one is better than literally nothing.

This could easily happen on a dedicated dev machine:
1. Install full VS or SDK
2. Realize it's bloat and you just need command line tools to remotely use for your build process from your laptop
3. Change your mind and decide you want to use the GUI performance tools over RDP

Unless you're literally starting from a clean image whenever you make a configuration change. But using clean images religiously is an implicit admission that Windows is fragile as fuck.

Brayden Robinson

Mason Campbell

You're literally defending software for not even displaying a basic error message like "shit went wrong, read the log." I can't even guarantee the log had a useful error message considering the installer appeared to go smoothly. I could've checked, but I already figured it must be due to having the VS Build Tools installed parallel, so there wasn't much of a point.
MS certainly cares how these installers' GUIs look, they designed them to look really nice and fancy. You really think they designed such nice installers just to intentionally leave out even basic error messages and force people to use the command line flags to even hear a single peep that shit went wrong?
I'm not saying it has to repair itself, just give any indication whatsoever that something bad happened.

If you think that everything should be done on the command line then why do you even like Windows?
Because with Windows, I can have my cake and eat it too.
Linux forces you to the CLI, because it's GUI (all of them, without exception) is shit.
macOS goes the other way: it forces you to use the GUI, because its CLI is useless and plain obtuse.
With Windows, everything can be done from the GUI or the command line.
Basic config? Go through Control Panel/Settings - or double-click pre-made .reg files, or use netsh/powercfg/PowerShell, whatever takes your fancy.
Advanced config? Dig deeper into those control panels, or hit the Registry Editor - or just type random REG.EXE commands (again, with your .reg files you've built up over the years, because you're an advanced user).
Programs? Use them interactively - or script them with VBA, VBScript, PowerShell, AutoIt, whatever.
No other OS comes close to matching this flexibility. Why the fuck would I go anywhere else?

So what? If you wanted to complain about how terrible linux was, you could've taken screenshots of it at the time. You're an idiot. You didn't even try to mount the drive. You could've opened up gparted and mounted your root drive from the GUI and seen that it was fine. Instead you tried to run the wrong fsck or ran fsck on the wrong partition and got upset that it gave you an error message that you didn't understand, and just assumed it corrupted your disk with no real evidence.

Normal people have other things to do than carefully curate a "screenshots of things I autistically hate" folder.

"wsus didn't properly install the updates to the computers we selected" is a clear example of a problem that was well described.
Your report was more like saying you fucked up your bootloader, booted a live cd and tried fsck on something, and got a scary message so you assumed your fs was toast.
If instead you said you booted a live cd and tried to mount the root partition through the gui, and it gave you a bunch of messages about file system corruption, then I would believe you without any specific error messages or screenshots. But the more plausible explanation in the description you actually gave me is that you just fucked up running fsck. Even trying to run fsck immediately in that situation is stupid, and suggests you had no idea what you were doing. All you had to do was try and mount the drive.

You just had to open gparted and mount the fucking drive, idiot. I mean, I assume the dude complaining about wsus also is an idiot and user error is responsible.
But your specific description of causing drive corruption is literally impossible. You fucked up your bootloader, that was it. Your root partition was probably fine and you just didn't know how to mount it from the livecd. Maybe you ran the wrong fsck on it and fucked it up then, I don't know. But it sounds like you had no reason to assume file corruption and immediately run fsck, which shows that you're incompetent.

If you change bootloader and get a message about not being able to mount the root FS, any reasonable person would assume it's a configuration error, not a disc corruption error.

"Literally impossible" was an exaggeration. Practically impossible with how much QA goes through. Obviously any program could go absolutely bonkers and touch something it shouldn't. But this is a red herring, it could just as easily be your Windows host or hypervisor fucking up.
If you change bootloaders and it can't mount the root partition, nobody rational would assume the partition was toast and immediately run fsck on that.
The fact that you still can't come up with an excuse for not simply mounting the drive from a live cd tells me you had no clue what you were doing.

Jaxson White
Jaxson White

And what exactly do you mean by that?
Ah, I think I've figured out what your warped mind means by that. You're acting as if I was accusing you of covering up by not saving your virtual hard disk or taking screenshots. I NEVER said you were covering up, I just said it was hard to believe without evidence and mentioned how easily you could've made screenshots, which would've been helpful if you were really trying to solve your problem and not just give up immediately. That's why I made a screenshot, to solve my Windows problem.
I also detailed how your story didn't make sense and how easy it would be to find someone else with the same problem, given how extremely common it is for noobs to use ubuntu.
I explicitly said that if your story was told slightly differently I would've believed it without evidence. It's not the lack of evidence that made me doubt, it's that your story doesn't add up. No experienced linux user would immediately try and fsck after a failed boot due to installing a new bootloader.

Hardly anywhere near similar to deleting a Jow Forums post that I literally replied to and acknowledged and anyone with Jow Forums-x can see, as is not uncommon practice. The evidence is still there. I supposed I should've waited an extra minute or so for the archive to crawl it, my bad.

Noah Russell
Noah Russell

I was doing things other than posting here constantly. And I never accused the user who deleted his hard disk of covering up, so of course it wouldn't come to my mind. That delusion only exists in his mind. I don't believe his story without evidence because it doesn't make sense.
He may believe he's so unbelievably smarter than everyone else and caused hard drive corruption in an extremely heavily used distro with a simple apt command in a bug that no one else has caught before, but he's almost certainly wrong.
I would never claim I found a bug so incredibly obvious in Windows or Linux. Bugs in both, I've found, only occur in relatively obscure scenarios. Something like simply installing a boot loader overwriting your root partition is completely unheard of in modern distros.

Kayden Sanchez
Kayden Sanchez

I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to create them by itself. Maybe SBS does since it has all sorts of stupid shit preconfigured.
Why would you install it on a DC and not a vm though?

Jason Young

It came preconfigured from the head office that way - which I agree it's a little silly, but meh. I'm not actually supposed to touch it the basic setup, but I do have quite a lot of rights delegated to my account.
I'm a basic bitch onsite admin, I don't deny it - but it pays very, very well for the amount of work I actually have to do.

Mason Cox
Mason Cox

You will note that I first simply asked for details about exactly what he did that caused the corruption, and for more information about the error message. His first post about the problem, , in fact, simply said "inoperable ATM because the ext4 FS inside it destroyed itself" and didn't talk about apt at all. This quote even implies ("ATM") that he still has the VM available and didn't delete it, something he later denies. It's not like I immediately responded with "pics or it didn't happen." I asked for details to try and understand the bug.

I didn't even want exact quotes. If he simply said that the error message on failing to mount the root partition was something vague like "something something checks failed" then I would believe there was real corruption.
Instead, the detail I got was that there was simply a message about failing to mount the root partition, then he immediately tried to fsck from a live cd. After installing a boot loader, it would make sense if the root partition failed to mount because of misconfiguration. Nothing in his account makes me think he knows how to locate his partition and fsck it. Nothing makes me think he had a good reason to try this in the first place.

But apart from that, it's the comfiest thread on Jow Forums: anons come up with their questions, you give them their answers, and they walk away happy - and often even thankful.
Windows is fundamentally pretty hard to break, so even canned answers often give good results.

Jaxson Thomas
Jaxson Thomas

Probably just because he made it up. He started off by saying that "the ext4 FS inside it destroyed itself" and then he tried to say that installing a new bootloader destroyed it. That doesn't sound like destroying itself to me. And then deleting the vm immediately after you complain about it. Certainly weird. I mean, I don't use Ubuntu but surely it's smaller than keeping a fresh Windows 10 VM around and that doesn't take much space. I guess some people use vms without snapshots? He could just be a new user with absolutely no motivation to figure things out because of his windows bias, but immediately giving up and deleting the vm is pretty weak.

God I hate that Bandizip faggot, I shat all over him with his own ghacks numbers. I don't see many serious gentoo shillers, just the occasional shitpost. Mostly the bandizip shill and sometimes the mpv.net shill, but the latter seems to give up pretty quickly.

At least the mpv.net shill isn't so fucking naked though. I don't believe he's actually a shill at all, just a bit too easily impressed.
Eh, I think he's a shill. Especially because of his repeated use of the same dumb image macros.

Well, here's my most generous interpretation of what installing a bootloader could've fucked up for that user. It could've fucked up the partition table (extremely unlikely though), much more likely than fucking up the root partition. And if your partition table was fucked, then the last thing you'd want to do was run an fsck on the wrong partition boundaries. He should've just opened gparted and took a look like the noob he was. Tried to do something he had no idea about instead. Sad.

Hmm, hadn't noticed that. Might have to run through again.
Unlike Bandifag, who conducts himself like a 2006 squeeze page, the fucker.

The funniest shit the bandizip shill did was repeatedly post the same image of an archive of the source code of bandizip that was taken straight from their homepage. Maybe I shouldn't have have called him out so he'd keep posting it and be transparent.
mpv.net shill has been repeatedly posting some dumb kimetsu no yaiba image macro lately.

I'm no weeb, so I don't know kimetsu no yaiba from fromage ala carte. All that shit looks the same to me. Probably how I missed it.

Well sure, but even then you can probably recognize the text is the same. There's our hometown beauty, our favorite mpv.net or whatever it says. What an annoying prick.
