Gnome's real face has been showing the anti GNU side since RMS showed up in their mailing list, asking them to stop shilling proprietary software on Planet Gnome. They use systemd as their platform, instead of the Shepherd as init. Using systemd, which is Linux specific, made it harder to port it to the Hurd. They use flatpak instead of Guix, etc.
They also don't mention the system is GNU/Linux, they only say Linux is their "core technology".

The only good thing about GNOME was it's size - it was easier to say GNU is the operating system, when GNOME was a GNU package. Now "Linux is the OS, totally not only a kernel" shills will have more arguments.

As a result Miguel left Linux world and got a job at Microsoft, and even working for microshits he still managed to open source C# compiler. And people hated him for it. He had a view on GNOME and it was developing, but since he left it's just spinning around, since 2011 nothing really changed, only added back then features were removed. Guix GNU/Hurd is in progress - Guix have been successfully built on Debian GNU/Hurd 2019, now they're fixing problems with bootstrap binaries.
There has been made progress in SMP in GNU Mach, there are some bugs to fix.
They've started working on a rump kernel, so the Hurd will be able to run Linux drivers.
And there were some networking improvements and lots of bug fixes.

Not that bad, unless someone is going to #cancelhurd, then well be all using Google Fuchsia on every device.

Actually drivers of a BSD distribution could work too - the Hurd is really flexible thanks to it's modular, object oriented architecture.
