i think the general over-the-top campiness of the character was easier to deal with in 1996 back when computer games were shitty and had little to work with. self aware humour also hadn't been done to death.

My favorite build engine game will always be Blood and my favorite FPS protagonist will always be Caleb, to be quite honest with you.
Duke's age is also his greatest asset here though, he's a staple of the FPS genre whose first game set many precedents for what's to come. The intent behind Duke Nukem was to parody over the top action movie heroes, and by god John St John's voice acting and Duke's voice lines relay this perfectly.

Objectively false. When most folks think of 90s FPS protagonists they think of Lo Wang, the Doomguy, Duke Nukem, Gordan Freeman, the list goes on.
Duke Nukem Forever was definitely horrendous as a Duke game though, and the fact that it may have very well killed the potential franchise saddens me greatly, sort of like how Blood 2 killed any potential for the game to actually take off and become mainstream.
