Don’t fall for the short term visa crap (H1b, H2bs etc.), they aren’t going to last for you.

The vast majority of immigrants from Europe to the US these days (it is just around 100k per year) come to the US due to family relations (typically a US husband or wife, or being the underaged kid of a US parent, and not being naturalized). Then there is the student route, if you study (undergrad) in the US, you are likely to find a permanent job in the US with an F or J type visa, which more easily transition into a sponsorship permanent employment visa.

tldr - it is fucking hard for someone to apply for a job in the US from Europe and move there permanently. Just look into London, Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Dublin instead. Also Canada and Australia, that’s generally possible too with a PhD in compsci.

I wasn't being cynical. I work at a university and I see how many foreign students come here on a visa and how many get married or have a child before graduating. Not always to stay in the country, but it's a ripe market for finding a mate of compatible intellect.

It can also be a good way to find a company to sponsor you after you graduate, for that matter.

There are 2 permanent US visas for “exceptional people”, EB1 and EB2. EB1 is the “professor and researcher” visa, essentially for Nobel laureates and high profile professors and funded researchers. There are 2,000 of them a year... yes 2,000. Then there is EB-2, which is for people with exceptional ability that benefit the US economy. It’s essentially the entrepreneur visa for those who already have shown exceptional abilities but can’t come via EB-1... but still hold at least a master’s degree or a PhD. Those are also 2,000 a year, mostly applied within the US by people already there on temp visas.

So no, a PhD or doctorate is no ticket to the US. There are millions of them and the US is not interested.

The US is one of the easiest countries to get in illegally, probably the easiest Western country to enter illegally, live illrgally and work/study despite an illegal status. The US is also one of the easiest countries to permanently move to based on family relationship (brother, sister, kid, parents, spouse, adoption etc.).

But the US is by far the hardest country to permanently move to with an advanced degree from a top university.

tldr - I studied and worked in the US and went through the visa process and it was shit. In Germany you can emigrate with an engineering bachelor degree in electric engineering from the University of Vladivostok and make 35k gross... it is that easy.
