circlejerk opinion to be honest
the game isn't without it's problems obviously and certain aspects like class diversity have gotten worse over time, but overall it's been on an upward trajectory.
leveling through current content has stayed more or less the same and leveling through outdated content will always be a slog. with the introduction of m+ gearing is actually interesting and can be done quickly without being something any braindead casual can do while adding something to do in the endgame other than raid or pvp. speaking of raids, raid design is a little lackluster at absolute worst.
i don't pvp, so i can't comment on its quality over time
i'm watching a stream instead

I can’t stand any of the asinine story developments that they’ve shit out following wotlk. It’s just repulsive. Now those shortcomings I could ignore if the gameplay was good enough but as for the gameplay when I quit (a couple weeks into antorus):
Pvp was spoiled, in substantial part because of demon hunters. World pvp was a lost cause even on servers like emerald dream - much thanks to sharding.
Raiding was cancer because you either have to do it on a -weekly schedule- or try to pug. And of course since discord is the craze now, listening to dysfunctional psychos is mandatory for raiding.

i mean i admit we're not exactly working with there must always be a lich king every expansion, but the writing isn't that offensive. especially when looking at moment to moment rather than overarching plot it's still plenty passable

world pvp is in a fine state currently. warmode gives people an incentive to actually have pvp enabled while questing or doing world quests or whatever so it's really not hard to find people to go fight randomly walking about, i don't see what sharding has to do with it. the occasional faction focused world quests even make world raid pvp pretty frequent

but this has always been the case. that's just an intrinsic part of an activity involving 10-30 people

Now I’m not familiar with this war mode thing but sharding means any world pvp done on a server is illegitimate because
-only random people on the server will be visible to groups of other people doing world pvp things; sieging a city means nothing and half the people there can’t even defend it
-people will randomly appear in and out during a conflict
-it’s cross realm

The pugging system means people can nitpick and demand absurd requirements just for you to get into a group. And the people with those requirements are just as bad as those without them.
People on ventrilo were a lot more tolerable. Discord is nothing but cancer for every community that uses it.

I'd say its pretty popular now with the global reach of it, but early on its was basically nothing. Few major series have been translated. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon above all else, and whatever was popular on tv got popular, so your Digimons and Pokemons. Shonen Jump got a translation too but that was during the mid 00's and after that its been really sporadic with it which is a shame. But almost everybody knows english here so its just about finding decent scans and to english-translations. Remember not too long ago two dudes on the tram arguing whether you say the x in hunter x hunter(you dont but whatevs)
