i would if i thought that was the problem and might end up doing it anyway, but i can do that stuff in hitfilm. with other mp4s i can extract either track by itself and work with as many layers of audio or video as i want. the issue is that for some reason the video track isn't properly encoded somehow so it's not being recognized. i can also tell it's a problem with the file since i auto generate thumbnails in file viewer, but it's not making one for this

i truly have no idea. honestly i probably just need better conversion software than VLC. i do have a perfectly fine mp3 of the audio, though. maybe it's worth it to just focus on trying to get a working video track and take the time to sync them up all the time
