well it depends. typically casting classes like that mostly just use their spells to solve big problems and let other handle other stuff. they also usually have a few shitty spells that they can cast as much as they like but aren't quite as strong as just a competent person shooting a bow or something.
i don't like it either though which is why i typically play half casters like rangers, paladins, warlocks that can't cast as many spells but are still at least close to as useful as "guy with sword" without their spells

that has been my impression as well. but i suck in other classes as well, so why bother. i just get overwhelmed by all the different options, have no experience with classes, prestige classes whatever so i end up with a character that's basically worse than if i'd just turned on auto level up.
the one time i did well was when i looked up broken builds on google in advance but then the game sucked so i never finished it. it was neverwinter nights 2 i think.

to be honest i think d&d-like computer games all tend to be garbage overall. difficulty in particular is really hard to get right so a lot of them tend to be absolutely brutal unless you're already really familiar with the system
