That says a whole lot, holy cow.

Hey, wanna have a nice discussion on an imageboard? These things are geared for that kind of thing moreso than other sites. After all, that's this place's only redeeming quality.
How about this: video games
I don't really play them at all but I'm certain my accumulated knowledge from being an orbiting secondary will be enough to have some kind of coherent convo.
Let us start simply:
Undertale.
Was it good? or was it shit?

it was bad 3 hours at best of dialogue and simple fights
good porn though

How many muffet images do you have
I want them

It was quite gimmicky but that's what launched it into popularity. As an RPG it was mediocore at best but still enjoyable, and the fact that each of the game's endings were quite short actually helped its case quite a lot.
A lot of RPGs tend to outstay their welcome for me. I get invested in the story and combat mechanics but it then decides to go on and on until I either drop the game completely or finish it purely out of curiosity instead of enjoyment.

I liked Undertale but I didn't care much for the meta stuff. Gameplay-wise the meta stuff was awesome but it really killed the atmosphere for me. Meta elements to that extent mixed with a serious story don't mesh well at all for me, because if the game world keeps reminding the player that it's all a game what's the point of caring about the story or characters if it's not real even within the game world? I think the reset and reality-bending powers Flowey and Sans have should have just been in-universe powers that manifested itself through meta gameplay without making the story meta.

Best thing that came out of it was the porn, there's a reason I waifu'd Muffet """"ironically"""" at one point. She was pretty cute, despite how clunky or retarded or hamfisted that story was.
I think the best time to play Undertale would've been when it just came out. There really wasn't anything like it, hype and fanbase included, before or since. Anything after was just derivative or just exposed the flaws-- the story, the over-reliance on references or gimmicks-- the game had to begin with.
Gonna have to break out the old harddrive to what I saved back from when I lurked /utg/ hol up

Actually, to sum this up, the entire game was a gimmick. Real popular gimmick, might add. Andrew Hussie must be rolling in his bed every night just thinking
about what he lost with Toby lul.
Apparently this was the only Muffet image from that era I had saved. I'd wager the rest were on my lewd thumbdrive which I fucking destroyed almost two years ago. Whoops.

Yeah it might be a gimmick but it worked really well. I hope other games one day take the concept and really expand on it.
>I'd wager the rest were on my lewd thumbdrive which I fucking destroyed almost two years ago.
nnooooooooooooooooo
aw, that's a shame. I have a few saved, but I'd like to get more.

Yes the game is very unique in idea and gameplay. Best time was definitely to play it like a month after it came out though since there was some basic info on what the game offered without everyone shoving it in your face and screaming "NEVER DO THE GENOCIDE RUN YOULL HAVE TO FACE SANDSDDSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
A lot of the game's story seems to rely on going in completely blind. A large aspect of it is taken away when someone who's just barely heard about the game is informed about its multiple endings and how crazy they can get.

>There really wasn't anything like it...before or since
Honestly, I think that's a good thing. Another large element from the game would be lost if the story's gimmick was very popular. It relies upon being unique to get the player intrigued and want to play the game, rather than looking at it and saying "Oh, it's another one of those games. Next one please."

i can't remember

We got more metashit with Doki Doki Literature Club, which I must say didn't really leave any impression on me. Reather than just loop that story back into the game's actual world like Undertale did, they essentially left the game unresolved with the meta gimmick front and center. Like "LOL gaym is acktchually POSSSED by code DEMON" was far more upfront than "Furfag shotagoat and bone man abuses mechanics of the world he is inherently a part of," and far more unworkable in grounding the game more solidly in "real life" in the meta.
DDLC was clearly influenced by Undertale's meta gimmick, but it just ran on that single gimmick unlike the other few Toby had up his sleeve. And post-Undertale, the gimmick wasn't as shocking or new.
Oh wait, found two more unsorted images when looking through. I'll postum.

>We got more metashit with Doki Doki Literature Club
I completely forgot that DDLC even existed until you mentioned it just now. That "game" was really just a fad, I'll be honest with you. It was a fad because it was meta and had an*Me in it.
>they essentially left the game unresolved with the meta gimmick front and center
Yes and that was done to fill the power vacuum that Undertale left behind after its hype died off. That's what upset me about DDLC. Sure, Undertale didn't do the best job of incorporating being meta into the story but it did manage to tie it all together in a way that made a lot of sense.
DDLC just tossed it in for shits and giggles and it felt like 0 fucks were given.
>And post-Undertale, the gimmick wasn't as shocking or new.
Even if DDLC was released before Undertale had been, the meta content is implemented so poorly into a format that relies upon a good story that it wouldn't have taken off, to be frank.
It was there to hop aboard a train and then hop off with some quick cash.

I'll be honest, I didn't bother checking out DDLC because to me it was literally just a shitty Creepypasta game, which even before then were a dime-a-dozen. It fell back on the old trope of "ooooh it is a glitch and it is scary blood time!! it KNOWS you" that a 13 year old could come up with after perusing the Creepypasta Wiki.
It took the hype for the meta gimmick and what Undertale did with it and it took two steps back into the Stone Age.

>I'll be honest, I didn't bother checking out DDLC because to me it was literally just a shitty Creepypasta game
And that's exactly what it was. Sprinkle in a few cute characters that people will consider waifu material and you've got the ultimate normalfag bait.
>which even before then were a dime-a-dozen
At least when things like sonic.exe were around, they were made with an idea in mind that was done by a legitimate 13 year old, not a mental one.
>it took two steps back into the Stone Age.
It really did. Free games made by the creepypasta community tried and experimented with all sorts of ways to give the game a spooky, meta experience that Undertale would later do quite well. Before that though, it made sense for creepypasta game # 102895491 to come out.
I'd rather play Madden 2025 the day it comes out than play DDLC again.

to come out with such gimmicks*

I just don't find the DDLC girls all that interesting. I gravitate the most towards Natsuki but the game focuses on her least of all. There's been tons of VN's that have already done similar concepts, but most normals haven't played those so it's quite fresh to them. At least it's free, so I can't complain too much, but if it had been sold for the normal price of a VN I'd feel kinda robbed.

Actually looked up that one image and found a whole trove of excellent images from a4_suke.

The characters in DDLC even look bland and stiff. Like the lad who drew them never drew in eastern style before and was forced to in the most basic way possible. I mean, it fits because all four are just cookie-cutter trope personalities anyway.
