I've been working with argentinians and colombians for years (each one from their respective country) and I talk to them in portguese and they talk to me in spanish and somehow we can understand each other.

I can easily understand written Portuguese. Not spoken, though, unless you speak slowly. But the problem is not the language perse but the accent. If Brazilians didn't have that weird acccent I'd understand their language. Galician for example is easily understood because Galicians speak with a Spanish accent eventhough the language is basically Portuguese
