I think it's a great thing that we are taught ancient greek history and heritage primarily, simply because the role models are better. It's a heritage of intellectuality, and one of the main reasons greece produces a fuckton of scientists to this day despite its relative shitty hierarchy with respect to the developed world.

The Byzantine world is in many ways closer to modern greek, with the religion and the language, but even byzantine greek culture has many elements of ancient greek culture. It makes sense to study both in order to understand the continuity in any case.

Problem with byzantium is that you only realise how interesting it is once you've examined every other medieval state at the time so you have points of comparison. It's not that roman history is boring by itself, but when compared to WW2 or the greco-persian wars or alexander the great, it's just not going to captivate kids in the same way.
