Why are Mexicans too lazy to capitalize on their own mythology?
Practically everyone knows Greek and Norse mythology from TV, movies, and vidyas. Meanwhile there's only ever been ONE half decent Mesoamerican film ( Apocalypto ) and it was made by an American.
Did the Norse and Greek make these TV shows, movies, and vidyas? The answer is no. No they did not.
Xavier Hall
Yeah but there's probably enough to piece together some cool stories. I mean like there's been a thousand movies about just Hercules and they're all ranging from literarily accurate to complete bullshit.
Most of the mythology was destroyed by the Spaniards. The Aztec codices are on the few written documents they have left
Wyatt Torres
Why are Slavs too lazy to capitalize on their own mythology?
Ethan Powell
Very serious post believe or not, the greeks live in a very heatly world, compared to mexico. We actually WANT it but people is so poor too found anyone that is that smart to know their own ancestors. Im not a self hate but peruvians and mexicans are very poor to know what is their OWN civilitation (and they're very interesting to be hosnest), but thats the reason. We are a poor shithole
It would be really cool to see some shit related to La Santa Muerte.
Also, I have seen lots of mangas based on Aztec mythology, sadly most of these are yaoi.
Isaac Miller
> "Coatlicue" is referred to by the epithets "Mother Goddess of the Earth who gives birth to all celestial things", "Goddess of Fire and Fertility", "Goddess of Life, Death and Rebirth" and "Mother of the Southern Stars".
> She is represented as a woman wearing a skirt of writhing snakes and a necklace made of human hearts, hands and skulls. Her feet and hands are adorned with claws (for digging graves) and her breasts are depicted as hanging flaccid from nursing.
I mean wouldn't this make an awesome boss in like Dark Souls??
Evan Nguyen
Mortal Kombat has a pretty cool Mesoamerican god character
Jose Davis
Most Mexicans don't even know about it
Parker Bell
The names are too complicated, most aztec gods are inhuman and abstract and demand painful sacrifices from humans, to modern audiences they're cosmic horrors and only work as bad guys.
Luke Baker
An anime/manga based on aztec/mayans would be amazing.
It wasn't the greeks who spread a lot of their mythology, it was mostly western europeans. Also, you have to take in account the sheer amount of classic greek literature existent and compare it to what we have left of Mesoamerican literature. I bet most scholars would kill to have an Aztec equivalent of the Odyssey
Evan Butler
dumb
Chase White
Are you kidding? What you described sounds badass. People love dark shit nowadays. Maybe you missed it, but the Aztec death whistle was a huge meme on the normie media a few months ago. The complicated names things might be an actual problem though, but still I'm sure people would love it.
its an uninterrupted continuation of the aztec god of death
Carter Peterson
Mexico is racist. If you are Mexican and show any interest in Mesoamerican stuff people will insult you. Only foreigners, especially whites, are allowed to appreciate indigenous things.
Ian Nelson
that's awesome though
>Nearby, the researchers also found skulls apparently stuck together with mortar—remnants of one of the towers flanking the tzompantli, where most skulls once exhibited on its posts ended their postmortem journey. The team spent a second season, from October 2016 to June 2017, excavating the tzompantli and the tower. At its largest, the tower was nearly 5 meters in diameter and at least 1.7 meters tall. Combining the two historically documented towers and the rack, INAH archaeologists now estimate that several thousand skulls must have been displayed at a time.
your average mexican could only name tlaloc, quetzalcoatl probably huitzilopochtli wont probably know tonatiuh is a god
Hudson Moore
I have seen lots of independent comics thatbuse aztec/mayan themes. The problem is that they only use them to flavor generic capeshit or social comment stuff. What would be cool is an abstract more mythic take on it like Kill Six Billion Demons
Luke Harris
They are focused on mariachis, big dumb hats, ponchos and pointy boots.
Lincoln Baker
don't mexicans like anime? make an aztec manga or something
Camden James
AWAKEN MY MASTERS
Jayden Turner
This, thanks papá Spain. It's gone forever and very few people have traces of actual Aztec blood if any at all.
Xavier Gomez
Jesus Christ, Aztecs were fucking horrifying.
Dylan Watson
What does "mortar" mean in this context? Stones of some kind?
Colton Edwards
always had the notion that santeria came from afrolatinos
Jacob Rogers
>very few people have traces of actual Aztec blood if any at all
how can that be? most mexicans have a major component of amerindian ancestry. the aztec lineage just disappeared then?
Benjamin Hall
>Practically everyone knows Greek and Norse mythology from TV, movies, and vidyas. And this is bad, because no one knows anything for real, they just get the bullshit rendition from said TV, movies and vidyas.
Dylan Russell
santa muerte isn't santeria
Wyatt Myers
you think aztecs were the only natives here?
Chase Campbell
no read wiki worshiped since ever
Easton Ortiz
Mortar is a workable paste used to bind building blocks such as stones, bricks, and concrete masonry units together, fill and seal the irregular gaps between them, and sometimes add decorative colors or patterns in masonry walls. In its broadest sense mortar includes pitch, asphalt, and soft mud or clay, such as used between mud bricks. Mortar comes from Latin mortarium meaning crushed.
Samuel Rodriguez
A type of concrete used in sticking bricks and shit together.
Joshua Thompson
teh spaniards fought the aztecs so aztecs died, and their allies lived
Grayson Taylor
no of course not. I just find it hard to believe that such an eminent indigenous group would have no living descendants
Ryan Perry
You would get an Aztec themed DBZ or some DeathNote knock off where the protagonist makes a deal with the god of the dead. What would be cool is something more esotheric
Adrian Rivera
i dont care that much about those matters
Leo Brooks
i will enchant u then
Hunter Ortiz
Aztecs were Nahuas, Nahuas still exist but most Aztecs were killed
Michael Richardson
>tfw ive never watched apocalypto
Parker Gutierrez
There's a furry carton on YouTube that borrows elements of Aztec myth as well as some shit from Native American and settler's folklore.
Jason Hall
Centuries of mestizaje and the fact that most other tribes teamed with the spaniards against them because they were not the nicest neighbors () killing them or falling victim of the newfound diseases spaniards brought. They were pretty much wiped out and only lesser tribes remained.
Parker Perry
Santa muerte it’s not an aztec god of death, some ignorant new age temascal chaman take the grim reaper and misinterpreted some text from the bible. But La Virgen de Guadalupe possibly it’s a continuation of Tonantzin.
Christian Lee
apparently some people thought it was racist when it came out because it portrayed the aztecs as extremely evil. idk about that I just enjoyed it as an action/suspense movie without thinking too hard about it
Parker Foster
They should hire Neil Gaiman.
Carson Nguyen
>The creature is described as dog-like, its waterproof fur often clumping up to create spikes (hence its name). The ahuizotl has hands capable of manipulation and an additional hand on its tail. The ahuizotl is feared due to its liking for human flesh, especially nails, eyes, and teeth. It is said to live in or near the water and to use the hand on the end of its tail to snatch its prey, dragging the person into the depths to drown them. Victims of the ahuizotl, Aztec beliefs state, are destined for the paradise of the god Tlaloc.
id watch a good prduction about prehispanic stuff desu something like vikings or GoT maybe id learn something
Benjamin Butler
Short answer: no budget.
Long answer: There might be a lot of creative ideas out there, but almost no incentive to look for production houses here. Their budget is limited as is and they'd prefer to spend it on more shitty novelas or content that'd attract the lowest common denominator. It's why you see the same trite ideas being puked out by the same 2 or 3 studios here with an ounce of a budget. There's almost no goverment financing for these type pf projects and when there is, they drag their asses so bad in giving out the dosh it's not even funny. Consider pic related. An original idea and only marginally related to all the other washed out concepts? Who's in line to get the rights first?? Well, they're still looking for a distributor and it's been in production since 2009. For a movie that's cost $10 Million!
Unless some chinks want to pour their cash here and revitalize the industry (like they're doing with the mall industry here) there's no hope aside from some project here reaching Despacito tier popularity.
Damn that's pretty cool why did it take a fucking MLP cartoon to feature it?
Austin Walker
yeah that would kick ass actually
Jayden Bell
pretty much. Today if you're from the south East mexican places people call them ''indio'' ''oaxaco'' ''chapaneco'' ''prieto'' and it was the place were Mesoameroca Rise. It is like a bad Karma probably the emperors of there were too evil for had this horrible punish today. Mesoamerica is the poorest part of the Americas now
It just got some references, like the Alien VS Predator movie, or the Aztec gold from the first pirates of the caribbean movie. Also, prehispanic civs on Aoe2 are pretty cool.
central americans also suffer horribly from a unique pattern of occupational chronic kidney disease. also there's a shitload of diabetes in chiapas apparently
This, cool kids in Mexico will never openly say something positive about our indigenous cultures.
Christopher White
This, look at the Samurai and the ninja (shinobi) people literally believe that they can fly and travel on the time thanks to the media
Kevin Edwards
that's actually pretty sad and unfortunate. mexicans should be proud of their prehispanic forbears. they did all kinds of cool shit like build the pyramids and domesticate maize
lol the first sentence talks about 1) Its up for debate 2) most likely syncretic (fusion of Christian symbolism/belief and pagan worship). That's the opposite of "uninterrupted". Sounds like some gutted worship of older death god later got transferred to a Christian symbol for holy death.
Thomas Cooper
it's just like the thing to do in mexico. Decades of brainwashing that the european way is the only way causes many mexicans to feel ashamed of the native side of their history and that part of their culture.
Jaxon Smith
That's all of latin america tbqh
Joshua Clark
we need Hollywood to change this i demand dani devito as an aztec blood priest
Cooper Hall
>diabetes I really wonder why, our diets make heavy use of corn but at least back then people were physically active. I tried cutting carbs for some weeks and felt great but as a spic it's almost impossible to quit tortillas, I just can't.
Nicholas Sullivan
It's the soda and vegetable oils, not the corn
Logan Mitchell
Those are just cucked Norteños. They feel ashamed for being part of Mexico and not of USA.
In the rest of the country, people are very proud of their roots. CDMX and other main cities, have gov programs to promote prehispanic culture and folklor. Specially on Yucatán peninsula. Everything is based off the mayan culture down there, mainly for touristic purposes.
Some weeks ago, CDMX government built an mayan ballcourt to play that ooold game (the one that appears in El Dorado movie).
Don't let Mexisharts go even more delusional with their LARP. Which I may add, has roots with Criollos we wuzzing. They're rape babies, they have no mythology
Jackson Martin
really with regard to diabetes I'm just citing anecdotal evidence in the form of a NYT piece I read recently about diabetes rates in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas:
I don't know anything about the epidemiology of diabetes in Mexico in general. In this particular town in Chiapas it seems the prevalence is being driven by soft drink consumption.
>Coca-Cola gets here more easily than medical assistance, drinking water or public health services lol natives everywhere are so absolutely fucked in every possible way
Hudson Torres
Because Mexicans see themselves as Spanish i.e. Romans
Some of you have mentioned Apocalypto, it's a cool movie but not historically accurate. They mix mayans with aztecs, what a silly thing.
We don't profit with prehispanic cultures in big scale because it's kind of boring for most of people and the projects get little funding.
If you want to watch a really cool, accurate and totally in english animated story about the creation of the world according to mexicas (aztecs), click this:
This mini movie might help both, mexicans and foreigners, comprehend the philosophy behind sacrifices and death in mesoamerican cultures. Sacrifice is a way to value life, just like Jesus sacrificed himself. Spaniards thought human sacrifice was creepy but not a tortured person nailed on a cross.
Joseph Collins
its a neverending we wuz europeans vs we wuz aztec kangz. neither is right if you think about it.
Alexander Rodriguez
Cool, thank you.
>Some of you have mentioned Apocalypto, it's a cool movie but not historically accurate.
yes that was also my impression
>This mini movie might help both, mexicans and foreigners, comprehend the philosophy behind sacrifices and death in mesoamerican cultures. Sacrifice is a way to value life, just like Jesus sacrificed himself. Spaniards thought human sacrifice was creepy but not a tortured person nailed on a cross.
I think it's also worth pointing out that human sacrifice occurred in many cultures all over the world, not just in mesoamerica. for instance the roman records describe rites of human sacrifice practiced among the celts. so it's asinine to suggest that aztecs were uniquely evil or something
aren't those dances literally just WE WUZZ and LARPing?
Isaac Martin
Are you a CHI or why exactly do you care so much?
Robert Nguyen
>Diabetes is the leading cause of death in Mexico, according to the World Health Organization. The disease claims nearly 80,000 lives each year, and forecasters say the health problem is expected to get worse in the decades to come. By contrast, in the U.S. it's the sixth leading cause of death, with heart disease and cancer claiming 10 times more Americans each year than diabetes.
>Rising rates of obesity combined with a genetic predisposition for Type 2 diabetes has caused a slow steady rise in the condition in Mexico over the last 40 years. Now roughly 14 percent of adults in this country of 120 million are living with what can be a devastating and even fatal health condition. Diabetes poses an increasing burden on the nation's hospitals and clinics. The surge in diabetes threatens the very stability of Mexico's public health care system, according to new reports.
