The law states that you only need to have a valid reason to own a firearm, and technically anything from full auto to breech loaded artillery and missile systems is legal for civillians to own, it just gets very hard to prove a valid, legal reason to own them. Sport shooting is the common justification to have semi-autos, reservist practice is another. Collecting is the clause you use for the rare fun stuff.
