Suicide and substance abuse

This. Suicides have increased something like 30% since 1999 or so, and tens of thousands of people (mostly middle aged or younger) die every year from opioids.

It's unsettling to say the least how things like suicides and personal tragedies have come to be viewed in terms of lost profits for employers.

It's incredible just how bad things have become for the average American

I still don't understand this. How can you move from pain drugs from an injury to dying of heroin shot and similars?

would need one that compares quality of life too tho
at least here, the amount of miserable years has increased (in late age, due to all kind of patologies)
if they die a couple years sooner but healthy (very doubt) it would be worth it imo

This is the beautiful, civilized world we have created for ourselves. Those people have no regard for human life.

can't wait for the designated transhumanist chips to be implemened to make cope for increasingly inhumane working conditions

In the 1990s people didn't know that opioids were addictive, so they were prescribed very often. People who take opioids can become addicted, so people started overusing them before doctors realized the potential for addiction. When doctors stopped prescribing pain meds so often, people started getting them illicitly or buying heroin/fentanyl/other potent non-medical opioids. Since the body develops a tolerance for opioids after a while, addicted people need higher and higher doses to feel the same effect. That's how people end up overdosing.

I understand the biological basics of dependence. I don't understand how a normal adult can think "well, I will just shot myself some heroin I guess" when he runs out of drugs. Surely stopping to take them would sound better to most? And you don't need to be a genius to understand that you drop little by little until you remove them.
Most standard pains can be dealt with NSAID anyway. (ignoring critical and terminal patients obviously)

americans have some of the worst food quality as far as i've seen

the white race is finished

Meh, quality>quantity. The only thing science does is make you live longer in a wheelchair while wearing adult nappies.

Oh my optimistic young child, we knew since morphine issues after ww2

remember to never feel any pity for americans when they die because the gofundme medical bell campaign failed

they brought it on themselves

reminds me of that Aussie last year that had to flee to Switzerland to kill himself since it wasn't allowed in Australia. Eventually 80 or 83 doesn't make much difference if you no longer feel like you do anything in this world besides just sit there

Can anyone explain to me why it is a good thing for employers?
Don't they get to pay insurance and funeral expense of the dead employee?

They arent the life insurance company, and whatever they may pay is probably less than continued retirement benefits

Bloomberg and WSJ are business news. Of course they're covering this from the perspective of business people.

Wheelchairs always looked fun to be honest
