Nation state is a word people living in non-countries use to denote real countries.
In real countries, no one knows what a "nation state" is, because they already have a word for it: country.
Of course modern day is dominated by non countries, and the discouse is as follows:
nationalism is bad
patriotism is good
Because for real countries, stable countries, patriotism is the same as nationalism.
In non countries, nationalism is no-no, and bad, and you should be "patriotic" aka love the state and the memes the state force feeds the people.
