Are consumers conditioned to think they are getting a deal if they spend more money?

I went to a gas station today and grabbed an energy drink. The lady behind the register said. "Those are two for 4". I said that one was plenty. She got fucking appalled, and told me that if I bought another one it would only cost me a dollar and 20 cents when I'm paying $2.79 for one. I told her I didn't need more than one. That would be too much caffeine, and she acted like she was shocked that I wouldn't buy another. Sure, I could have saved it for tomorrow but knowing me, I would have drank it today and would be back at the store again buying another tomorrow, which made me think. People buy things they don't need just because they're on fucking sale and the normal average Joe is brainwashed to think that if they don't buy more they are losing money.

Thoughts?

Consume more.

If you really go back everyday to buy one you really should have taken that deal. If not than yeah that would be a waste of money. Either way you shouldn’t be drinking that shit anyway.

I think you're a nigger for buying a Monster in the first place

cool logic, except it only applies if you're never going to buy that product the rest of your life

if you're going to buy one tomorrow then you actually are retarded and are wasting your money because you could have had the one tomorrow for 1.20 instead of 2.79

why wouldn't they push two instead of one on you, when the actual production costs of the drink is probably 10 cents tin and all? It's called aggressive sales tactics

were you at a Wal-Mart affiliated store/gas station?

they're taught to do that and energy drinks @ gas station are sold with arbitrarily large gap, so the store likely paid less than $1.20 for ONE can of it. the lady knew this. most customers know this. but her job is to try to get you take the offer.
you're not a dumbass and realized it. gl.

I know you guys are just going to say this is a self control issue, but when I have energy drinks sitting around the house I tend to have a second one, in the afternoon when I don't need it. It's so much easier to over consume if it's pushed on you and "oh it was so cheap I almost got it for free" I feel like when you get that second product at a cheaper price, you don't value it as much. Whether I got just one or two monsters, I'd have probably been back tomorrow for another, and I know other people feel this way too.

I was literally taught this in business class when I was 12, there's a name for it can't remember rn

free market capitalism and all the hype about """rational self interest""" is really just about propaganda, manufacturs consent, and emotional manipulation

of course socialism is shit but market fundamentalism is retarded too

most deals are like that

You have a point about the need to consume "more" through the sales, but it's only a bad deal if you recognize that the deal in consumption is there for an extraneous reason, such as spreading the brand name, building loyalty. If you don't, you're just another consumer. However, if you do and continued to purchase them regularly, then you're choosing to accept the idea of more, and your argument has no merit. If you do, and don't purchase, then you're acknowleding that the idea and execution is for purposes beyond this deal, and could be used as example against consumer culture and the need for more to build loyalty towards these items and brands.

So if you go back tomorrow, and still have this plight in your head, you're no better than brainwashed Joe Schmoe.

>wall of gibberish
Just bought 100k

A good example of this is buying new video games off of an online marketplace instead of going to the store and buying a physical copy. If your Internet goes out, in a lot of cases you can't play the games . I tried explaining this to one of my relatives and they're just like "well that's capitalism". Fucking retards.

>buying games
You are supposed to pirate them you dunce.

Same goes for movies, music , software.

>Sure, I could have saved it for tomorrow but knowing me, I would have drank it today and would be back at the store again buying another tomorrow, which made me think.
Just reinforcing this

Yep. Actually, this sort of buying is pretty stupid and short-sighted. If you bought in bulk, surely you'd be able to save money but that would require foresight, planning, and self-control.

Happened to me; I bought the second then put it back on the shelf right in front of her

1.21 to fuck with their brainletism and stock system

Nah you're just a brainlet. You buy it and plan to drink it tomorrow. Done. weak ass bitch. When i buy 2 detergents at a discount, i don't start using double the detergent, i keep it for the next time i need it. Same with redbull, i buy it cheap and keep it.

Dude, always buy in bulk if it's something you buy all the time anyway. Like a jar of peanut butter, if it's 2/$5 or $2.99 each, I would always choose the 2/$5 deal. Why? Because I always buy peanut butter anyway.

But if it's just a one-time thing, then screw it.

I think its funny you are talking about brainwashing when you pay $2.79 for 20 cents worth of caffeine, vitamins, and corn syrup in a 10 cent can.
