The other day I was listening to a podcast and the (American) people were talking about Australian politics, for some reason, and they scoffed at the idea of what we have and called our political landscape backwards and far to the right of America.
Left me somewhat confused but there was also a lot of pot shots trying to call us uncivilised because of our tendency to abbreviate words. To be honest it was rather surprising to listen to since it was an otherwise reasonable podcast when it comes to talking about American stuff. It came across as a strange inferiority complex (fucking why?) which was largely provoked by someone commenting on how a few Australian actors have taken leading roles in a couple of Hollywood movies.
I don't think our parliamentary system is anything special but I've never really came across people so clearly emotionally upset by it. Even the silly banter between politicians during question time was used as a reference point to how backwards the system is, as though that sort of bullshit doesn't manifest itself throughout all different forms of political forums.
