I suppose it's not unthinkable, as there is always a chance, however small. The thing is though, is that Russia, like any other country, wants to be top dog in their respective sphere.
The only way I see Russia joining the EU is if some outside threat was great enough to warrant it, and only if Russia maintained most of it's autonomy without answering much to EU parliament.
