Actually we have snow in the north during winter, which is great, a lot of mexicans don't like hot weather, specially humidity

Get a sun lamp or something equivalent, or vitamin supplements for winter. I'm in WI and you're further north so winters can get pretty harsh at times and the lack of sunlight can have quite the negative effect if you're not a native.
If you want to separate yourself from the stereotype just live like normal and don't join any gangs. Avoiding Chicago isn't a must, if you want to see the city go see the city but keep in mind there will be people there who will assume that you're up for illegal activities just because you're mexican, moreso if they manage to catch you speaking spanish.

No problem, and that gang incident was because I went to a major city. Luckily where I am the Mexicans that tend to gravitate towards gangs end up just moving to California or Texas when they realize that nobody is buying into their shit. While the ones that stay here end up either opening a Mexican restaurant or a taco truck. Tacos with corn tortillas made by older Mexican ladies are the best I've ever had.
