There's literally no incentive for an Anglo to learn a second language. Why would anyone waste their time?

Didn't Alan Watts study Sanskrit and Chinese
Couldn't imagine not being bilingual by the age of 15
Depends, if you never plan to leave your anglosphere for more than a few weeks I guess it could be considered a waste of time. Never mind that learning another language is known to improve memory and expands your literary comprehension by a whole other dimension. Still if you don't read books to begin with, what's the loss right?
Understanding the Scottish is akin to knowing a second language
I'm still monolingual by this standard though
>Never mind that learning another language is known to improve memory and expands your literary comprehension by a whole other dimension
There are a lot more efficient ways to do besides learning an entire language. Learning anything has similar effects, so you might as well learn a skill that you might actually use
>There's literally no incentive for an Anglo to learn a second language. Why would anyone waste their time?
I read French pretty fluently but struggle to speak or listen. At this point it's just annoying because we started this when I was 12 and I just want to get it off the list.
It pains me to say but the kiwi is right
wow so this is what this faggot looks like?
my girlfriend used to quote this asshole and after a week i left her. Last i saw of her she looks like a hippie drug addict riding a caravan full of unemployed NEETs through australia.
Honestly sounds like a cop out but don't blame us, blame our shitty school systems that put 0 emphasis on it. I do not know a single person who successfully learnt another language in school. For example in my city within a 10km radius you will have 1 school teaching Italian, another teaching french, japanese or german. It'll also be for maybe 1 or 2 years. At least you guys learn English "universally" in europe (at least in the nordic and surrounding countries).
Well that's a stupid statement, for many people this probably is the case, but your career options are much wider, if you can speak some useful language, spanish, russian or chinese for example. Even if it seems so not everyone speaks english
Yeah.
Everyone that matters does
GR2, enjoy your ban.
The school system is a reflection of the culture. How do you think generations of "speak English, cunt", is going to rub up against public schools trying to properly promote foreign language acquisition? It ultimately falls back to funding and appeasing voters; with dumb parents willing to send their kids to a different school if someone tells them that a particular school is trying to force language x down their throats.
As dumb as it sounds, a lot of kids end up going to schools selected by parents out of peer pressure, even if the reputation isn't really based on reality.
You're right, there is no push to learn another language, most people are too closed off about learning another language. My native is English (obviously) and my parents are from English speaking backgrounds but if I have kids I'll make sure they learn a language even if its outside of school. A useful one though
There is also a lack of access to foreign media, desu. Sure, you can find it easily online but a few years ago (okay, maybe a decade ago), we used to have stuff like foreign films on SBS. Those were scrapped in favour of more garbage like Fat Pizza.
Even foreign films can be enough exposure to get someone interested into learning more about a language.
I still remember being complaining about SBS being commie propaganda for having Asian movies broadcast. Never change, boomers.
>being complaining
people complaining
To be fair, SBS is leftwing tripe propaganda but they do have some cool things now and then.
I did my homework in french class so I hand the time after school to things that I actually cared about my parents didn't care that I failed every year if passed English math and science
I think another thing that contributes to it is, what language do we learn? I mean they teach Spanish in majority of U.S schools, French in Canada but what do we learn in Australia? Chinese? There really isn't a logical one at the moment for us. Tbqh I hope its not Chinese
For Translating.
Google Translate is a hoax.
Most Americanized speakers cannot understand their tongue beyond household nouns, advanced vocabulary, and common phrases (if that). I know a Greek raised in America who does not know the word for "work".
Foreign speakers are exposed to english everyday through pop music and memes, however they never get a full grasp of the langauge as you see on Jow Forums. Even if foreign translators move to an english speaking place temporarily they stick to their ethnic group; which prevents them from learning the language.
>but user, don't other countries teach english in elementary school?
Yes, but they are not exposed to english in a political or economic sense (which is the most useful part of learning english). The greek I mentioned earlier could translate english better than most native born greeks. They also can be more poetic in translating native greeks.
Google translate will never go anywhere, neither will foreginers who attempt to translate english (unless they are trained like english translators are).
The fact is that since english is the lingua franca it is our burden as anos to study other languages, because the average foreigner does a terrible job at understanding ours unless they live here.
She sounds happier than you. Is your sense of normie superiority that great that you would rather consciously deny yourself happiness?
No it doesn't. Learning new language forces the brain to adopt new pathways other than if you learn a skill. Languages are how we think and feel, you WILL think differently if you learn a new language.
*anglos
Sorry my touch screen is sensitive, it's my burden to correct this for non-anglos who cannot comprehend english and the spelling mistakes we make.
We must be perfect for them to understand us, but since we are not perfect we must learn their non-relevant languages.
Thankfully the only relevant languages will be Indo-European thanks to China mismanaging their gender demographics. Even if they spread to africa it will become an africanized dialect which will be worthless.
Tbh I think you need to study English more
>you WILL think differently if you learn a new language.
I thought Sapir-Whorf was bullshit?
i want to speak an ancient dead language because it would be cool :3
why was he so cool bros
how else would you read mein kampf
Sorry I was drinking. I probably drank 3-5 aussies worth tonight (aka a 12 pack) so my mobile touch screen wasnt as responssive.
