For example the housing market has become fucked in many countries due to massive amounts of immigration, for example canada. Also if there are social benefit systems in place they frequently get abused by newcomers (this is less of a problem in america though), i'm getting to witness the death of the nordic welfare state firsthand and unskilled immigration is one factor in it's death. The amount of menial jobs in the first world is decreasing since it simply doesn't make sense to pay many times extra to produce here. If you look at the bigger unskilled immigration in this day and age does more harm than good. My next point will apply mainly to europe since it's due to social benefit systems but the arrival of newcomers has allowed wage developments in low income fields to stagnate but the economic benefits that that brings get largely lost since by and large immigrants from the third world are a net loss on the taxpayer. People are inherently tribal beings user, you shouldn't forget that (what constitutes are tribe changes a lot, nation/religion/ethnicity/favourite football team/etc) but those social dynamics are pretty much always in play. That kind of thinking is one reason china is set to surpass the west, even if they don't care for each other (thanks liveleak) they realise the benefits that china numba won mentality brings.

Also the better more motivated worker line needs a lot more proofs, you can't expect people to believe that on face value. The level for education for example speaks against the "better" factor, also consider that nowadays jobs need generally more educated people due to the nature of work available.
