I am not a big fan of tricolor flags, but they ARE telling. While it's true the Dutch did it first, the French popularized it (mainly through its sister republics, then later through various revolutionary regimes in 1848 and beyond). While the French tricolor started out as the colors of Paris (red and blue) surrounding the color of the monarchy (white), eventually (after the execution of the king) they colors became associated with liberty, equality and brotherhood. Having a tricolor flag means at least nominally being committed to these values most of the time.
Imagine choosing the country you live in based on the flag and not on its values, living standards, culture, climate and safety. Do you pick your insurance based on what company has the best commercial too?
