The february breakthrough was only possible because the Finns ran out of ammo. The troops attacking over the bay of Viipuri would have been obliterated on the ice, if the coastal artillery had ammo. But they ran out of their last shell.

Because in order to be good at war the commanders must value the lives of their soldiers, the equipment should be modern (according to particular times of course) and well-maintained and the people in charge of the whole campaign should be interested in winning the war with minimal human losses instead of just inflating their own ego. In russia/USSR it was always the opposite.
