MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s president vowed on Saturday to redouble his fight against an epidemic of chronic fuel theft after thieves punctured a gas pipeline north of Mexico City, causing an explosion that killed at least 66 people and injured 76 others.
The blast underscored the deadly perils of the fuel-theft racket, which has cost the government billions of dollars a year and has been the target of a weekslong crackdown by the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“We will continue and strengthen the fight against the illegality and the oil theft,” the president told reporters during a visit to the site of the explosion. “We will carry on until we eradicate this practice.”
The explosion, which occurred on Friday night along a pipeline in a rural part of the state of Hidalgo, was particularly deadly because the promise of free gasoline had drawn scores of residents to the breach in the pipeline.
Videos taken before the blast showed a raucous atmosphere, with villagers from the rural municipality of Tlahuelilpan, including families, whooping and laughing as they filled plastic jugs, pails and canisters with the gasoline, which gushed from the break like a geyser.
In the footage, military personnel who had rushed to the scene can be seen standing by and observing the throng that had converged on the pipeline, which runs from the nearby Tula refinery operated by the government-run oil firm Petróleos Mexicanos.
Mexico’s secretary of public security, Alfonso Durazo, told reporters that there had not been enough military personnel to turn back so many people and cordon off the site.

Is unlikely this was part of some organised gang. Usually those guys know how to puncture the lines without letting the fuel leak and spray everywhere, partly because it's inefficient to let fuel go to waste, but mostly for their own security.
As for the incident itself, there have been dozens of videos and pictures of all the people in there. Yes, there was like a hundred, and despite the amount of pictures, there were no more than a dozen, perhaps even fewer soldiers and cops. Add they couldn't use firearms, there was nothing they could do. However, there are already people spreading the rumour the military were who killed all the people, they intentionally set the whole thing in fire. It's incredible stupid, even with a quick view to the videos before the incident it was quite evident what would happen.
According to some reports, the fuel was evaporating very quickly, and some people were already intoxicated and throwing up, which was indicative of the concentration of explosive vapours in the area. Rumours are some of the people were planning to made even bigger the rupture, so they could extract even more fuel more quickly, but nobody have said how they were planning to do that. Finally, looking at the still recognisable bodies of some of the victims, is evident a lot of them were wearing synthetic fabrics, which with a bit of friction can generate small sparks.
