Is there anything wrong in a major way with intellectual property law today? How would you change it (other than abolishing it altogether)?
IP law

The UCC was neither passed, nor lawfully passed.
it's a fundamentally broken concept IMO, it only exists to help old Jews hold on to their outmoded business models. Even still, they're being outcompeted by streaming services, which is what would have happened without IP law.
Patent law is absolutely atrocious right now. Patent trolling is pretty fucking bad but I't would require a lot more funding to overhaul the system and have patent clerks do a more thorough check the patents before they approve them. Lots of frivolous and vague patents out there.
This is the major problem. Also the fact that companies can hold only copyrights well after the original creators and their dependents have passed away. If Disney can maintain the trademark on Mickey Mouse in perpetuity then that dissuades them from investing in new franchises and creating new characters, aside from the aesthetic arguments and the inevitable franchise fatigue we all suffer, this means that they don't spend money on new young artists, R&Ding new characters and IP which is just bad for the economy.
Originally copyright was all about ensuring that if you invented something people liked, that you could get adequately reimbursed for it. Think about the Picasso story:
>Picasso, could you draw something?
>Sure I can, have you got a dollar bill?
Picasso proceeds to draw an exquisite, non-cubist caricature on it in a matter of seconds
>Now here's 1 dollar. If you want your old bill back it'll be $20,000
>What!? But it's only worth a dollar, it only took you 20 seconds to draw on it!
>Ahh yes, but it took me 20 years of training, of slaving away at my studies, my canvases, observing life, many muses and torrid love affairs for me to gain the skill to draw that in 20 seconds... Also I'm Picasso you cunt, it's worth $20,000
But as for patents you have these troll companies who invested nothing into the actual R&D nor are they reinvesting the money in future R&D while also restricting the availability of the technology or utility of those patents to teh general public. Bad for the economy and society.
>j-just think of the artists
this is some milquetoast stuff man
this is like "democrats are the real racists" of IP positions
>abolish
t was originally intended as a way for inventors to be compensated has turned into a way for drug companies to supress cures so they can continue selling stay alive pills and for morally bankrupt corporations to turn centuries' od children's stories into cost centres. Its destroyed innovation and none of it makes its way back to the people who do the inventing. Its proponents are increasingly at the forefront of anti-privacy and universal surveillance, monitoring and lobbying for copyright law to trump all individual rights, its lobby groups finding money is used to foster political and judicial corruption and clientelism its time it was fucked out as a barrier to innovation, artistic and technological advancement.
