I am sure some brainlet will jump into the threads and claim that its because modern italians =/= romans and or renaissance italians, but thats just wrong.
The reasons for rise and decline of civilization are extremely complex, and anyone who points out a single factor is either a brainlet or simply dishonest.
Maybe its the decline of Mediterranean trade, or at least the Italian role in it (keep in mind that Venice went as far as causing crusaders to attack another christian nation due to it)
maybe its because italian lack of unity, while being a good thing back during the time even a single city state could be competitive is a bad thing now, as smaller, less unified nations are inevitably dragging behind
maybe its some other factor
who knows really, social sciences are extremely lacking in substance when it comes to a question of rise and decline
