First time hearing that someone is afraid of a lake.
I am not really afraid of water, but I am way more cautious in the sea/ocean than in a lake. The sea looks endless and if the water takes you RIP, while in the lake you can see where it ends and gives me peace a bit.
But yeah, if the waves take you you are done no matter in what water.
However that one on your thread pic doesn't seem dangerous at all

The ocean is infinitely worse, though lakes have an eeriness to them too. That being said I love swimming so I do it anyway, I just find it strange that you'd be afraid of lakes but not the ocean.

A lake has barely any waves
The ocean is scary. Ever gotten into these currents that push you away from the beach? I forgot the name but that is actual scary fucking shit, I wanted to teleport myself back on the beach when it happened
You are just swimming not too far from the coast standing relatively still and all of a sudden you feel like you are far as fuck from the beach, but every time you try getting closer you are pushed back as much
The trick is to swim parallel to the beach and you eventually get out of these bitch ass currents

I'm only scared of the Finnish lakes. 95% of the lakes in my area are muddy as fuck a few meters from the shore and there's nothing nastier than sinking your feet 30cm deep into that cold ass mud.

I'm a very comfortable swimmer, I can swim for more than an hour without rest if needs be, and can manoeuvre in it pretty good (used to "water wrestle" with my brother when we were younger)
But I get nervous in deep clear water, if it's clear than because of the depth, if it's not clear then the unknown beneath
