There was this study where cities in Chinese and Indian will grow in terms of gdp by over 150% in the next decade but Lagos won't grow...at all. Nigeria is fucked.

Life in the major cities isn't as bad as westerners typically think of Africa, but for the tribes in the desert things can get pretty hard, especially with terrorist groups frequently raiding around the borders.
The people were super nice, everyone loved westerners. The scenery was really beautiful too.

They're fucked because the developed world can't be arsed to develop them out of kindness or develop them at all. It's pure exploitation save for a few countries.
Africa has only improved because many countries have resolved their domestic disputes and have integrated themselves with the global economy. Not because the people outside did anything. China is taking the opportunity to become the major player in Africa now.

Exactly. The locals liked America the best because unlike the French and Chinese, we at least pretended that we were helping them out instead of going full neo-colonialism.
It's a shame too. There used to be a good amount of revenue from tourism up until wars in the 70s made things too dangerous. Hopefully someday there'll be a return to normalcy...

Fun fact: hedgehogs in Niger are like rats are in the west, everyone just thinks of them as ugly pests. A local that I was talking to saw one and freaked out, trying to kill it. When I explained to him that we import hedgehogs to America to keep as pets, he kinda looked at me funny and asked why.

Developing nations must improve first their education, a country with educated people will develope easier. Sadly it isn't the case of Niger, where only the 28% of the people can read and write.

If its neighbors develop in 60 years as projected(nigeria) then niger will have developments or a decrease in population as they attempt to get hired in Nigeria/Chad/ect.. thus they will grow. Unlikely to be first world.

Actually it's the opposite right now. The city of Agadez is the largest hub of human trafficking in the world, with many people smugglers dropping off prospective immigrants there from other countries. They usually stay there for a while until they can save up enough for another trafficker to smuggle them to the Mediterranean. This has created a sort of migrant worker situation like the Mexicans in the US, where cheap labor is readily available.
Ironically this is being exploited by the US right now as the military is building up bases in the region. But once the military doesn't need workers anymore, there wont be enough of a need from American civil intrests to keep them employed, so that's gonna be an interesting thing to look forward to in the next year or so
