Literally everyone in America thinks they're middle class. The rich consider themselves upper middle class, the professional-managerial class consider themselves middle class and the working class consider themselves lower middle class. It's very handy since now all politicians can just pander to the middle class and everyone thinks "hey that's me!". It's like they've completely eliminated class consciousness.

It's not that hard to understand why. If you're upper middle class, you probably have some amount of intelligence and can see the writing on the wall as to what direction the world is taking. They see their class of people shrinking. They don't know why they even continue marching on. They realize that they're working generally for no real reason. If they have kids, they're likely not going to pass much on to them. If they don't have kids theyre struggling with why they even exist.
When you're poorer you either don't care or don't see the direction the world will take. You're generally too busy either surviving, not caring, or being a stupid monkey.
