Go look at pics of Russians before WW1, WW2. They were primarily blonde haired, blue eyed. Following their success and collapse, they slowly mixed and now your average Russian is a dark haired mutt of some variety.

In fact the number of blue eyed people has increased during the WW2 occupation period thanks to russian girls breeding with german soldiers, and before that finns.

I remember reading that Romanians and Ukrainians in regions bordering Romanians used 3 terms, Hohol for those on the Black Sea litoral, Rusyn for those in the plains of Bassarabia and Ruthenian for those in the mountains. Also Ruthenian was the preferred term for all Ukrainians before WWII.
