So I've had the best 6 ish months of my life here recently. I went out and bought a few truck beds full of volcano rock, then put up fliers advertising replacing existing plots with this stuff, or lining driveways with a layer. I don't even know what the right price to charge is, but I factor in the cost of the materials, then give myself $30 an hour on top of that. I've only had a couple dozen clients and I have more money than I know what to do with. Also I learned to lay tile or floating wood floors, and I make a fuck ton that way. I developed a reputation for quality work and I think I'm under market prices because I have to turn down new jobs about 3 or 4 times per week, on average. The best benefit of all of this is that I hide how much I'm making from my greedy whore exwife who stole our baby and extorts me for $1000+ per month, and the second best part is that I've got ripped as fuck and feel really healthy.

You don't make money while you aren't moving. If you don't own your own rig, you're at the mercy of the company. If you do own your own rig, the costs are exorbitant. The government decides what days you can haul what cargo. You're gone a good 25-26 days of every month from your home base.

I know, I loved shop class as a kid. I'm big into hand tool work, so this past school year I tried out a system where I offered extra points (and slightly more lenient deadlines) to those who decided to do their projects by hand (The higher level class had a choice between a chair and a clock while the lower level class made jewelry boxes and bookends). A month or two into the year and I found that a slight majority of my students wanted to try working with hand tools over the provided power tools. It really warmed my heart, desu. There's definitely hope for the next generation.

You guys have power tools? For us it was hand tools for everything but the jobs that required big tools like lathing or precise cutting jobs where the small bowsaw (may not be the correct term) couldn't get in. We even hand hand powered drills. Kinda fun actually
