Tell me about towns in the 20k-80k range in your country. What are they like?

I did and it's exactly like the one in the OP. Coming back home always feels so melancholic since I have the greatest childhood memories but now have to accept that in reality I grew up in a shithole.

Most of the towns in my country are below 80k in population, 80k is considered to be a lot of people in one city.
Finland. Small town centre which is surrounded by small suburbs. There are a lot of forests. Every town looks about the same but some have rivers/lakes next to them.

those who are 18-35 and are above underclass/working class usually come back around christmas, town looks more presentable with them on the streets talking in a more refined/educated accent and taking care of themselves they look very healthy due to better grooming

a small shithole city in the desert, full of african jewish families that are religious and imporvished, and russians that are just imporvished. each neighborhood has a batch of old groundhouses, some have buildings but most don't. in each neighborhood there are always only 3 shops: a barbershop, a falafel shop, and lottery/small kiosk type of shop. if you are lucky, there is a 4th iphone repair shop.
all youth is lower class uneducated, if they are lucky to be a little smart they never go back and go study in a mediocre college. if they are not they will grow up to own a kiosk, a falafel shop, or a barbershop.
the places are miserable, lifeless, no outdoors, nothing actually.

It's a bit boring, after 12pm nobody happen even during the weekend. Also small city = small opportunities, it's hard to get good job. Advantage is for sure that's really safe. Nothing wrong should be happen to you.

similar to yours but people stay in the town since its in a perfect spot for commuters.
the shopping street is still quite populated but all the well known shops close and instead we get kebab stores, barber shops and 1€ discounters (such as TEDi).
also, my city is very diverse because its near to the state capital. in general, it's rather quiet but if you go to certain parts of the town you might get robbed or beaten up. such locations are the train station, the residential block with high-rise buildings... well any place where low life criminals like to hang out
