When I was 8 I was hanging out with some guys. I was wearing blue shorts. They said me ty goluboi. I asked why. They answered because you are wearing blue shorts. I didn't know the hidden meaning of the word so I thought that it is cool. They said me to go to a pond (we had one pond there right in front of my house) and shout "Ya goluboi"
I thought that it was really cool idea so I went there and started shouting "YA GAALUBOOOOI"
I stopped shouting only when my grandpa saw it and told guys to go away

I heard few versions. One is because it sounds slightly similar to homosexual, another, because there were some meeting point for gays in Moscow in Soviet times near statue in the center of city. And there were a lot of pigeons around (golubi in Russian), and gays among them. And they were started to call themselves - golubi and then goluboy.
