I don't know about Slavs, but in Hungary, the general idea is that any country on a latitude above Czechia is a frozen wasteland, therefore it is to be avoided at all costs.
Similarly anything further south than Croatia is a hellish desert.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries there was a huge demand for Europeans to settle the west and many came from Austria-Hungary, the government didn't distinguish between different ethnic groups with Austrian citizenship.
