This is true. Nixon and Kissinger tragically viewed everything in terms of state power, they thought if the US economy was allowed to slip into recession, it would give Moscow proof that capitalism had failed. Because they thought capitalism was a function of government rather than of the people.

He was the strange combination of both a Beltway insider who'd been in the system for decades and at the same time an outsider who had contempt for insiders and loathed country club Republicans because growing up, he'd been an unattractive, unsociable nerd who resented rich jocks.
