They're all catholic with a lot of evangelicals - in fact evangelicals are poised to overtake catholics in the next few years.
With regard to race - they're well known for their Mayan/Aztec ancestry. The exact differentiation between mestizo and indio may be a gray area because it all comes down to percentages, but you can bet your bottom dollar it won't be hard to find indios as it would in any random sudaca country (Bolivia and Peru aside).

Recomiendo que visites los lugares populares y concurridos. Ve a Antigua Guatemala, Atitlán, Izabal, Petén, Ciudad de Guatemala. Si hablamos de playas te recomiendo mejor ir a El Salvador, es un viaje de 3 horas en auto que vale la pena hacer si venís desde tan lejos.
